Age as a quality factor of human life after the Flood

The concept of decreasing human life spans after the Flood is considered by analogy to a quality factor that one observes in physical systems. It is found that the concept is not inconsistent with what we observe from the decreasing life spans of the Patriarchs listed in Genesis. (This article is a bit mathematically technical. It is really just speculation but I found very interesting. Edited from an article first published online here.)

In physics we define the quality factor (or Q-factor) of a system using the time it takes for it to dissipate 1/e of its energy. If we then look at human life spans in terms of a quality factor we would all have to agree that length of life or age at death defines a sort of a quality factor.

One researcher examined entropy of living systems and concluded that essentially we die because we come into thermal equilibrium with our environment at senile old age.1 This is where we can no longer generate enough heat to sustain life in the body and we die.  So to live a long time means we have some sort of higher quality factor and it takes longer for the state to arrive where the cells in the body can no longer generate enough heat. This is of course what entropy is all about. Living things are complex systems and while functioning properly are highly complex low entropy systems.

Age of the Earth Creation/evolution hermeneutics History

Does the age of the Earth really matter?

From the following list, based on the biblical genealogies contained mostly in Genesis chapters 5 and 11, we can calculate the age of the Earth. Thus the Earth is only of the order of 6000 years old, not 4.6 billion years old as long-age-of-the-Earth deep-time evolution believers would have you also believe.Genealogies
The date of the exodus of the children of Israel from Egypt is the key to getting this connected to our modern-day calendar. It is like an anchor point. However there are many conflicting theories on that date,1 but Scripture tells us that Solomon started to build his temple to God in the fourth year of his reign.

“And it came to pass in the four hundred and eightieth year after the children of Israel were come out of the land of Egypt, in the fourth year of Solomon’s reign over Israel, in the month Zif, which is the second month, that he began to build the house of the LORD.” (I Kings 6:1)

This is the key that unlocks a door. The verse also tells us that this was 480 years after the Exodus from Egypt. The dates for Solomon’s reign are generally assigned to 971-931 BC. From the date of Solomon’s fourth year of his reign (966 BC), one can add 480 years to 966 BC and get 1446 BC (the year of the Exodus).

Pleiades and Orion: bound, unbound, or … ?

The beautiful Pleiades cluster and dominant Orion constellation are two of the most well-recognized groupings of stars in the night sky.  They are mentioned in Job 38:31, where God poses a series of rhetorical questions to Job about the majesty of His creation, in contrast to Job’s abilities.  Some creationists have suggested that astrophysical information was recorded in this passage, verifying the Bible’s claim to truth.  However, pictures by both orbiting and land-based space observatories contradict the interpretation that the (astrophysically) bound and unbound conditions of these star groupings are foretold in Scripture.  Read in context, there is no valid reason for extrapolating this passage to imply anything other than a declaration of God’s power in His majestic creation. (Slightly edited from an article first published in Journal of Creation 18(2):44-48, 2004; the original available here.)

Pleiades and Orion are easily recognized groupings of stars seen in the night sky.  Pleiades is well-known as the Seven Sisters, and Orion as the Great Hunter.  The constellation of Orion contains a large cloud of gas and dust, which is centred around the Orion Nebula located at the middle star of the Hunter’s Sword.  There has been much confusion over the years about a Bible verse describing these two constellations.

Why believe in God in an Age of Science?

photo--lecture1 at UoA

The following is a brief summary of a lecture I presented (picture above) at the University of Adelaide on April 4th 2014. This event  was co-sponsored by an Adelaide church which put up posters around the university the week before. About 50 students and staff attended the lecture which took place within the less-than-Christian-friendly philosophical and ideological environment of this typical Western university. From this picture (below right) of posters  you can see this is a climate where, for example, Marxism is promoted despite the fact that the ideology caused the deaths of 100 million humans in the 20th century alone. Our Galaxy near the centre of concentric spherical shells of galaxies?

On the fourth day God created the Sun and the Moon and by inference the rest of the solar system. He had already created Earth on the first day. Then the biblical text (Genesis 1: 16) reports “He made the stars also”.

On a moonless night the heaven displays a myriad of stars visible to the naked eye but billions upon billions more may be seen with the aid of modern large telescopes. It is estimated that the visible Universe  contains a hundred billion galaxies each containing on average a hundred billion stars. That is 1022 stars which may be written out this way as 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 stars. And the Creator knows them all by name.

He tells the number of the stars; he calls them all by their names. Psalms  147:4

The delusion of evolution

The Apostle Paul warned the young disciple Timothy to stay diligent to study and understand the Word of God and not to be deluded by the heresies in the day he lived.

O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called: Which some professing have erred concerning the faith. Grace be with thee. Amen. 1 Timothy 6:20,21

The word translated ‘science’ here is γνῶσις gnosis in the Greek text. It means knowing or knowledge. The warning is against that false knowledge—gnosticism.  Gnosticism was the predominant source of heresy when the New Testament was written.

The big bang is not a Reason to Believe!

A response to “A Response to Four Young-Earth Objections to Inflation” 1

Astrophysicist Dr Jeff Zweerink works for the Hugh-Ross-led organization Reasons to Believe. He recently wrote the above article. Relevant portions of his words are reproduced (in green) with my comments interspersed.

A remarkable correspondence exists between inflationary big bang cosmology and the Bible’s accounts of the universe’s origin. [emphasis added]

This is his summary statement which one assumes he will provide support for in the substance of his article. But if you look deeply into the details the substance evaporates.

He layeth up the depth in storehouses

I was reading the Psalmocean-820x420s and these verses struck me as important.

6 By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth. 7 He gathereth the waters of the sea together as an heap: he layeth up the depth in storehouses. 8 Let all the earth fear the LORD: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him. 9 For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast.  Psalms 33:6-9  [emphasis added]

The Creator, Jehovah, spoke the Universe into existence. The ‘host’ of heaven are the stars, which He knows all by their individual names.

He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names. Psalms 147:4

It was not the big bang that spontaneously created the Universe out of nothing. It was the mind of the Intelligent One who spoke the Universe into existence. He created the solar system and the planet Earth with all that was necessary to support life.

What do quasars tell us about the universe?

Modern large galaxy surveys  have been carried out over the past decade or more and with the use of robotic computer driven telescopes have been able to amass large samples of data on very large numbers of galaxies in the Universe. These surveys supply, via a website, data that anyone with a little knowledge can download and analyze for themselves and as a result test their own cosmology. Among that data, for example, are specifications on the type of object (galaxy, quasar etc), its position on the sky, its redshift, and its brightness (which is given in magnitude units).  (The following is a bit technical but very interesting nonetheless.)
