Yahoo News reported on July 17, 2023 “Dark matter power: James Webb telescope may have proven the existence of giant dark stars”. But there is so so much wrong with this report and it even is evident in the headline.
In science you cannot prove anything. You can only set up an hypothesis and attempt to disprove it. There are no proofs in science. So this indicates that the author is not science trained or he does not care. Therefore you can discount the claim to start with.
The text though is a bit more honest in this paragraph.
“Since 2007, astronomers have proposed the existence of a weird type of star: one powered by the heat of dark matter. In cosmology, dark matter is a difficult thing to explain because we literally don’t know what it is. We can’t see it, hence the name “dark,” but without it factored into our equations of the universe, things just don’t add up.”
Let’s unpack this.
Firstly, cosmology is not science. It is mythology, not science. You cannot do a repeatable experiment in cosmology. It is more like forensic science where you are trying to reconstruct some past event. In this case it is the origin of the universe.
The reason “things just don’t add up” is because the standard model of big bang cosmology is wrong. It is a failed model and should be rejected. Dark matter and dark energy are included in the LCDM cosmology in order to get “things to add up”. But neither exist in any lab and have never been detected by any lab experiment.
But because the Creator of the universe needs to be rejected as the source of all creation, these “fudge factors” have to be invented.
Without dark matter you cannot get stars to form, you cannot get galaxies to form, you cannot get clusters to form and you cannot get the universe to form macroscopic matter.
So conveniently they call it “dark”, meaning that it cannot be detected by any electromagnetic sensing system, telescopes tuned to optical light, radiowaves, x-rays, gamma-rays or otherwise.
As I explained before such ridiculous musing leads to the notion of stars, solar systems and galaxies made only of dark matter and also dark life. (Maybe they are demons!) Also they suggest you can have dark light, whatever that is. It is a materialist’s nightmare.
The article continues with
“Learning how certain so-called “dark stars” form would be a major win for better understanding our place in the cosmos.”
Hold a minute! Is this the Emperor’s new clothes again? How do you find out how some non-existent ‘material’ forms? It is nonsense not science.
Now, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) may have just proven that dark stars exist. (my emphasis added)
Back to the unscientific statement of “proven”. It is possible that the JWST could prove it does not exist, because we cannot see dark anything by definition. The article goes on to state that “astronomers believe that before our solar system existed ….dark stars were abundant.” What is the basis for such a “belief“?
From this point the article goes into pure fantasy. The dark stars were fueled by dark matter generating heat that somehow turned in elemental hydrogen and helium. The speculative language continues.
“The first stars in the universe may have been much cooler and powered by the annihilation of dark matter. If these dark stars still exist today, they would be too cold and dark to be easily detected [Emperor’s clothes]. Only their gamma ray, neutrino and antimatter emissions would reveal their existence, as might perhaps the presence of cold molecular hydrogen gas.” (my emphases added)
So look for sources that have these type of emissions and you then say it is expected emission from dark stars. This sounds more like assuming the conclusion you are looking for. The authors of a new PRL paper “proposed a ‘new phase of stellar evolution,’ in which the first stars in the universe are much cooler and powered by the annihilation of dark matter.”
It is the usual logic. Stars formed naturalistically but due to the physics we do know they will not form due to increased gas pressure as the alleged cold hydrogen cloud collapses and resists further collapse. To get around that, propose that they formed from cold dark matter that “gravitates” but is not subject to the known laws of thermodynamics and the cold hydrogen cloud will collapse in the gravitation field of the dark matter which does not add much heat.
Another way of saying that is, the physics we know does not allow stars to form naturalistically, so let’s invent new physics, that we don’t observe on Earth or in the solar system, and that will solve our problem of origin of the universe.
It is the same thing as inventing a new idol to worship, one made of their own invention. They must do this because they reject the Creator and refuse to acknowledge Him.
As I have said before dark matter is their ‘god of the gaps’. Now they use data collected by the JWST to try to put a new spin on the same evidence, which can never be conclusive in an underdetermined universe.
Side note: Some biblical creationist accept dark matter, because of the unexplained physics of galaxy rotation curves. But there have been explanations that do not involve dark mater. See Has the dark matter mystery been solved? And Does Dark Matter matter?

Dr. Hartnett, so what are some possible hypothesis for these mysterious observations, from a Creationist perspective? Thanks.
