Subtitle: What is life?

China has announced its plan to mass-produce humanoid robots.[1] Yes, you heard that right. Remember in 2021 Elon Musk unveiled Tesla’s Optimus humanoid-robot prototype with great fanfare. Now China has now unveiled its own plan to mass-produce advanced level humanoid robots by 2025. In early November the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology published a road map of its plan, but few details have been disclosed.
Nevertheless China has promoted the disruptive power of its robots. The claim is that it will be a disruptive event on par with the introduction of personal computers, smartphones and alternative energy vehicles. They claim that robots will ‘reshape the world.’ By 2025 the robots will have reached an ‘advanced level’ and will be mass-produced.
Many of us have had experience with AI – Artificial Intelligence. But that is really nothing more than advanced computers with mind boggling computational speeds, enormous databases and large language model training. You can query those AI chat bots and get amazingly good answers, most of the time. But sometimes the AI fudges the answer and gives you total rubbish. This is because it is not thinking and reasoning, it is running by programmed algorithms. It is not alive in any sentient sense. A cockroach is more alive than any of those AI programs.
Commentators talk about Artificial General Intelligence.[2]
Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) is the holy grail of the field of artificial intelligence. Unlike narrow or specialized AI, AGI aspires to replicate human-like intelligence in machines. AGI systems would possess the ability to understand, learn, and adapt to a wide range of tasks and domains, mirroring the versatility of the human mind. (my emphasis added)
The goal ultimately is to build conscious machines. It will mean more advanced features that can be used to surveil and control our lives. There is no doubt about that. More advanced tech will definitely mean a better ‘mouse trap’. And that is all it will ever be. This is because this goes to the question of life itself.
To the materialists[3] in the white lab coats it is only a matter of time before a sufficiently large and fast enough processor becomes sentient. Or millions of connected processors across the internet reach what they call the ‘singularity’ and start thinking as one.
This delusion follows from their worldview.
If you believe that biological life, based on the carbon atom, originated by accident in some warm pond of chemicals on the side of a volcano 4 billion years ago on Earth then within your worldview life could also arise from some arrangement of a sufficiently large number of silicon atoms. Even if they were arranged by design from the intelligent human mind and not an accident. But there are a few fundamental problems with that.
Evolutionists believe life spontaneously arose from pond scum. It is a belief that has no underlying basis in fact. No lab experiment has ever produced life from a chemical mixture even when all the best minds were applied to the problem. Even Nobel Laureates, like Sidney Altman, didn’t have a clue, yet he received his Nobel accolades in 1989 for the discovery of the catalytic enzyme properties of RNA, which was heralded as a breakthrough for the origin of life. I know this because I personally asked him.
The biomolecular processes of life are not the most probable reactions. They require intelligent molecular level chemistry and enzyme catalysis to increase the reaction times from billions of years to seconds, a 1017 fold increase, in fact. But even that is not what characterises life. It is information plus something else. Information gives us the correct chemistry to support life but something more is needed.
Information cannot come about by random processes. So where does information come from?
Why do we call inventions intellectual property? It is because they are the fruit of an intelligent mind. Then why couldn’t intelligent humans produce a thinking machine? This means life itself.
That is a fundamental problem that the God-rejecting materialist has no answer for.
According to the word of God, life was breathed into the first man, Adam, after the Creator fashioned his body from basic chemicals found in the earth, i.e. taken from the ground.
7 And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man [Hebrew: Adam (ruddy like red earth)] became a living soul [Hebrew: nephesh (being, creature)].
Genesis 2:7 KJVER
Even his Hebrew name ‘Adam’ describes him who was made from chemicals extracted from red dirt. But no breath means no life. Having the breath of life characterises a living creature [Hebrew: nephesh]. The Hebrew word ‘ruach’ translated as ‘spirit’ in Genesis 1:2 means ‘breath.’ Here God breathed the spirit or soul into Adam (though a different Hebrew word is used).
The correct chemistry creates the shell, the body, into which the life force is added. Life itself is not a property of the chemistry, or of the atoms, or of the electrons in the neuron network in the brain. Neither is it a property of the marvellously designed chemistry of the DNA, which is the greatest information storage system in the universe. The body is not alive even with all that information.
It is fundamentally something else. It is the spirit. The quickening of the body is the life force. There is only One who can create life, the Creator of the universe. Humans are the created, and will never be able to create sentient life, because they do not possess that power. Humans do not even know what life is.
Jesus, the Son of God, in His pre-incarnate state had a body, which theologians call a theophany. That is some sort of supernatural multidimensional vehicle to move through space and time. However Jesus was born on Earth as a human and took on human flesh.
5 Wherefore when He comes into the world, He says, Sacrifice and offering You would not, but a body have You prepared Me:
Hebrews 10:5 KJVER
God the Father literally prepared a human body for His Son to be born into human flesh. It was the Holy Spirit of God who fathered Jesus in Mary’s womb adding His spirit to human flesh. The life of Christ was not in the chemistry of the flesh but in the spirit inhabiting the body. At His death on the Cross:
46 And crying with a loud voice, Jesus said, Father, “into Your hands I commit My spirit.” And saying this, He expired. (Psalm 31:5)
Luke 23:46 KJ3
Jesus literally gave up His spirit to the Father. That means His spirit left His earthly body and He died in the flesh. The nanosecond after He gave up His spirit His flesh was exactly the same as before He died. This shows you it is the spirit that gives life, and not the correct chemistry.
It does not matter what you construct your artificial brain from, and even if a manufacturer claims he has achieved AGI, it can never signal the creation of life.
Unique DNA programmed chemistry is used to build, power and maintain the earthly body; that is its role. When we die our body expires but the life force, our spirit, does not. It lives on. The scriptures call the life force the soul. It is the real you. And take note what Jesus said on this.
28 … you should not fear the ones killing the body, but not being able to kill the soul. But rather fear Him, the One being able to destroy both soul and body in Hell.
Matthew 10:28 KJ3
The body may die or be killed but the soul, the spirit lives on. The soul can ascend to Heaven or descend to Hell. Only the Creator, who created the soul can destroy it. Humans cannot destroy the soul neither can they create a soul, a sentient life.
So this brings us back to the question of the creation of ‘human-like intelligence in machines’. For humans it is impossible. But what if humans created the ‘body’ for a spirit to inhabit? That has been the theme of more than one Hollywood movie. The ‘Ghost in the Machine’ is a prime example. The plot in that movie involved a serial killer’s soul being transferred to a computer after which he continued to kill people with whatever tools he could control. So is it possible that a demon spirit could inhabit a machine body? I believe that that is definitely possible.
Consider the incident reported in the Bible, which occurred in the country of the Gadarenes, when Jesus cast out a bunch of demon spirits from two demon-possessed guys (Matthew 8:28-34). The demons asked to be cast into a herd of pigs, which Jesus obliged them.
This illustrates the point that not one but multiple spirits can possess a body. Then why not possess a human built robot with 40 plus degrees of freedom that can appear to move and act like any human being? It might be fueled by a hydrogen fuel cell, but it is driven by a demon spirit or many demon spirits. The demon life was originally created by the Creator and not by some science geek in a white lab coat.
This leads to the horrendous idea of millions of demon-filled robots, with Chinese characteristics, used to the police us all. Can you imagine such a dystopian future? The world filled with demon driven machines that could turn on you at any moment and with strength far greater than humans have?
The hedonistic civilisation of the original Babel, in their arrogance, believed they could become as gods. Similarly mankind is building their own tower of Babel believing they have the power of the Creator. But soon their tower will come crashing down when Christ comes in judgment.
