Crazy Climate Cultists contend carbon dioxide capture counteracts coming catastrophic climate change catastrophe. Couldn’t clouds concurrently cause concomitant crisis?
Clouds cover our planet Earth. Clouds are composed of water droplets. The atmosphere is not only filled with clouds but also it is filled with water vapour. And water is essential to life on Earth. No water, no photosynthesis, which means no food, which means no life.
Water vapour is a far greater greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide, which the Climate Cult wants to totally eliminate. Well, why not eliminate water vapour as well?
Previously, in a satire piece, I suggested the elimination of all water from the planet to fix the alleged catastrophic global warning problem. The fact that the cultists don’t call for that, alone exposes the fraud.
Now I want to look at the effect of water in the atmosphere, both in vapour, a gas, and in clouds. That is, on how it reduces the total solar irradiance reaching the surface, i.e. at sea level. This is some more basic physics! So, sorry about that!
The following plot describes the intensity of sunlight (irradiance) in watts per square metre (W/m2), as a function of wavelength (in units of nm), with and without atmospheric absorption.

The yellow region of the plot shows what the power level would be if there was no atmospheric absorption. The red region shows the measured power in the sunlight reaching the surface after absorption by the atmosphere. Notice the absorption bands are labeled with H2O (water), CO2 (carbon dioxide), O3 (ozone) and O2 (oxygen). The depth of those bands tells you how much radiation is absorbed by those molecules, which in turn heat the atmosphere.
The regions for Ultraviolet (UV), Visible and Infrared light are demarcated. Most of the plot deals with the Infrared region. This is where molecules like H2O and CO2 act like little dumbbells, and vibrate and rotate in different modes and hence at different frequencies. Those modes of vibration determine the frequencies, and hence the wavelengths, at which those molecules absorb the sun’s radiation. The big gaps between the red regions tell us how how wide these absorption bands are and how much power is absorbed.
Just looking at this measured data you’ll see that water vapour absolutely dominates over carbon dioxide or oxygen. Literally eliminating water vapour, including all the clouds, would radically change how much energy reaches the Earth’s surface.
But the presence of the water vapour controls the amount of sun’s energy actually reaching the surface of the planet. (The red curve is lower than the yellow curve.) And the presence of clouds also has an important effect for life on Earth.
The greenhouse effect of the water vapour, where it absorbs sunlight and traps heat in the atmosphere, is actually essential for life. In addition to clouds, it is an important design feature of this planet, which was created by God to support life.
And it comes down to the properties of these molecules, water (H2O), carbon dioxide (CO2) and oxygen (O2). Besides water (H2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2) molecules, the oxygen molecule (O2) also has a small greenhouse effect because it absorbs radiation near 750 nm. Even the ozone molecule (O3) is important as it reduces the damaging ultraviolet light (near 250 nm) reaching the surface. It is the mechanical properties of these molecules that are life supporting design features.
You know that on a cloudless night the surface temperature is much colder. This is because infrared radiation is re-radiated back into space. Clouds act as a shield to that.
Cloud cover causes cooling during the day time because clouds reflect solar radiation back into space. That is why crazy Bill Gates supports insane programs like SCoPEx to inject carbonate dust into the stratosphere to reflect sunlight. Therefore cloud cover causes the surface temperature to have less extreme variations — cooler in the day and warmer at night. That is a good thing. Also clouds are an essential part of the water cycle, to bring rain onto the land and hence water crops, flush out rivers and support life.
Water vapour has about a thousand times greater greenhouse effect than does carbon dioxide. So why aren’t the Climate Cultists crowing about that?
Here is the irony. Clouds composed of water cool the planet during the daylight hours, and moderate night time temperatures, which occurs 24/7 somewhere on Earth. But clouds only exist because they condense out of water in the form of a gas in the atmosphere and that water vapour is the strongest greenhouse gas.
To understand how the atmosphere works consider if all molecules were removed, which includes all water, carbon dioxide, oxygen, nitrogen and argon. A vacuum would result and the surface temperatures would be extremely hot in the day and freezing cold at night, like on the Moon. That is both global warming in the day and global cooling at night. And the oceans would boil off! Now that would be real global boiling.
What I have considered here is not a vacuum, but the effect of the three greenhouse molecules (H2O, CO2, O2) and clouds made of water droplets in an atmosphere of mostly nitrogen gas.
If the Climate Cultists are fearful of carbon dioxide why aren’t they also fearful of water as both gas and liquid droplets in clouds? Both contribute to global warming! Clouds obviously confuse them.
The Earth with its attached atmosphere is a rotating sphere. This is also a design feature that equilibrates or evenly spreads out the effect of the sun’s radiation over the whole atmosphere, efficiently using atmosphere as it was designed.
To the Climate Cult I say: there is nothing to fear because the atmosphere is here.
