Christian Zionists teach that one day the Lord will remove the blindness from the eyes of the Jews and they will accept Jesus Christ as their Saviour. They say that this event will happen some time just before Christ returns to this world as Messiah in the end of days.
But there is a fundamental problem with this theology.
Often the story of the Apostle Paul, an Israelite and a Pharisee, before his conversion, on the road to Damascus is cited. He was physically blinded by the brightness of the glory of the Lord and remained blind until a servant of God came to him and prayed for the scales to be removed from his eyes.
18 And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight immediately, and arose, and was baptized.
Acts 9:18 AKJV
Then Paul could see both physically and spiritually. He was marvellously saved, born-again in Christ, and signified it by being baptised.
There is a clear message to this event. That is, that the Holy Spirit is the one who saves. It is not by our choice, nor by our actions. The Holy Spirit is the One who choses His chosen people. Those people are not those of any particular ethnicity but according to the will of God.
The Christian Zionists will claim Romans 11:25 as support for the special status they believe is given to the Jews.
25 For I would not, brothers, that you should be ignorant of this mystery, lest you should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fullness of the Gentiles be come in [which began at the cross].
26 And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob:
27 For this is My covenant to them, when I shall take away their sins.Romans 11:25-27 AKJV
Of course, this is true! All Israel shall be saved. However we need to have a correct understanding of who Israel is. Read The True Israel of God.
The correct understanding of this comes from the Apostle Paul’s teaching, which helps us understand the Old Covenant unveiled by Jesus Christ.
On the Cross Jesus fulfilled the Old Covenant and instituted the New Covenant of grace through faith, not of works or ethnicity.
Under the Old Covenant, via Moses, the truth of Christ is veiled and hidden but under the New Covenant, through Christ, the veil is taken away. By trusting in Christ your sins are taken away by Jesus’ shed blood on the cross, a perfect sacrifice for all sin.
13 And not as “Moses put a veil over his face,” for the sons [children] of Israel not to look intently at the end of the thing being done away. Ex. 34:35
14 But their thoughts were hardened, for until this very day the same veil remains on the reading of the Old Covenant, not being unveiled, that it is being done away in Christ.
15 But until this very day, when Moses is being read, a veil lies on their heart.
16 But whenever it [their hearts] shall have turned to the Lord, the veil is taken away. Ex. 34:34
17 And the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
18 But we all with our face having been unveiled, having beheld the glory of the
Lord in a mirror, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, as from the Lord Spirit.2 Corinthians 3:13-18 KJ3
Therefore there is no difference for Jew or Gentile. Whenever the heart of the Jew is turned to Christ the Holy Spirit removes the veil. Whenever the heart of the Gentile is turned to Christ the Holy Spirit removes the veil.
If there was some special event that removed the veil — the blindness from the eyes of the Jews — it occurred on the cross.
The mystery that Paul speaks of in Romans 11:25 is the blindness behind the veil of the Old Covenant, which Christ removed in His sacrifice. The Apostle John quoting the prophet Isaiah said:
40 “He has blinded their eyes” and “has hardened their heart,” “that they might not see with the eyes” and “understand with the heart,” “and turn back,” “and I should heal them.” Isa. 6:10
John 12:40 KJ3
At that time, many of the chief rulers believed on Jesus, but because of the Pharisees they did not openly confess Him out of fear. They loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.
The removal of the veil (blinded eyes and hardened hearts) was symbolised by the event of the veil of the temple being split in two.
50 And crying again with a loud voice, Jesus released His spirit.
51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was torn into two from above as far as below. And the earth quaked, and the rocks were sheared!Matthew 27:50-51 KJ3
That means the holy of holies is open to all to see. There is no other sacrifice needed. Jesus paid it all, once and forever. The veil was removed forever.
The point being that the event already happened with Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross. So all Jews (and all Gentiles) are without excuse. In Romans 11:27 the Apostle Paul was teaching that Jesus took away all sins of the children of Israel on the cross. Reading from the KJ3:
25 For I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers, so that you may not be wise among yourselves, that hardness in part has happened to Israel until the fulfilling of the nations comes in; [which began at the cross]
26 and so all Israel will be saved, even as it has been written, “The One delivering [the Redeemer] will come out of Zion, and He will turn away ungodliness from Jacob.
27 And this is My covenant with them, when I take away their sins.” Isa. 59:20,Romans 11:25-27 KJ3
The Apostle Paul quoted from the prophet Isaiah, with the Holy Spirit interpreting it for us. This is how the Apostles’ doctrine must be understood. The New Testament interprets the Old Testament and not the other way round.
20 And the Redeemer comes to Zion, and to those in Jacob [Israel] who turn back from their transgression, a statement of Jehovah.
21 As for Me, this is My covenant with them, says Jehovah: My Spirit who is on You [the Redeemer, Jesus the Son of God], and My words which I have put in Your mouth, shall not depart out of Your mouth, or out of the mouth of Your seed, or out of the mouth of Your seed’s seed, from now and till forever, says Jehovah.Isaiah 59:20-21 KJ3
The Apostle is teaching that the New Covenant started when Christ took away their sins, meaning the sins of Israel, and that happened on the cross. It is not a future event from now. The blindness was removed with the New Covenant on the cross. All glory goes to the Son, and Him alone.
Jesus Christ is the Redeemer (verse 20), who came out of Zion. He was born into human flesh from the seed of Israel. Jehovah God is the first voice in verse 21. He is speaking of the Redeemer. I have highlighted the pronouns You/Your for the Redeemer, the Son. (Yes, God’s Son Jesus identifies with these pronouns).
The meaning then is, God words will always remain with the seed of Israel, the true Israel of God. These are Jesus Christ’s seed forever. They are not disobedient Christ-hating Jews or anyone else who hates Jesus. No, they are those who love Him. And His words will always be spoken and believed by them.
Thus there is no veil anymore. The veil was removed by Christ, and now, all those who have been chosen, have had the veil removed from their eyes and they, like the Apostle Paul, can see the Son.
3 But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost:
4 In whom the god of this world has blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine to them.2 Corinthians 4:3-4 AKJV
Those who cannot see are blinded and believe not.
