Veganism has become a modern-day phenomenon, actually a curse. It is usually related to activism against the killing of animals. Vegans generally place animals on the same level as humans, a by-product of belief in Darwinian evolution. In my opinion, veganism is Satanic as it deprives people of the nutrients they need to survive in this sin-cursed world.
Vegetarianism is not as bad as that because at least vegetarians eat some animal products (dairy and eggs) which gives them added protein in the post Flood era. But even that is a denial of God’s clear instruction given to Noah and his family as they came off the Ark.
3 Every moving thing that lives shall be meat for you; even as the green herb have I given you all things.
Genesis 9:3 AKJV
A moving thing cannot be a plant-based food. The Hebrew word used is רֶמֶשׂ remes, which means a reptile or any other rapidly moving animal. So post-Flood animals were on the menu for humans.
This was for a very good reason. In the post-Flood world everything had changed for the worse as compared to the pre-Flood world and it became much more difficult to get the necessary proteins from a plant-based diet.
Having said all that, the headline question is “Was Jesus a Vegan or a Vegetarian?” Jesus Christ during His Earthly existence in human flesh never exhibited the behavior of a vegan or a vegetarian. At a minimum He was a pescetarian, as we know He ate fish.
After His resurrection He appeared to His disciples, and they thought He must be a spirit and they were frightened. He showed them His hands and feet, indicating the marks from the crucifixion. And then to dispel their disbelief He asked for something to eat.
41b He said to them, “Have you anything here to eat?” 42 They gave him [Jesus] a piece of broiled fish, 43 and he took it and ate before them.
Luke 24:41b-43 ESV
This means that in His resurrection body, with flesh and bone, He ate fish. A spirit doesn’t eat fish or anything else for that matter.
On another occasion after His resurrection Jesus appeared to His disciples, and this time He cooked fish for their breakfast.
9 Then when they came down onto the land, they saw a coal fire lying, and a fish lying on it, and bread. 10 Jesus says to them, Bring from the little fish which you caught now. 11 Simon Peter went up and dragged the net onto the land, full of great fish, a hundred and fifty three. And though being so many, the net was not torn. 12 Jesus says to them, Come, break fast. But no one of the disciples dared to ask Him, Who are You? knowing that it is the Lord. 13 Then Jesus comes and takes the bread, and gives to them, and the little fish likewise. 14 This was now a third time Jesus was revealed to His disciples, He having been raised from the dead ones.
John 21:9-14 KJ3
However prior to His crucifixion, while Jesus was in His not-yet-resurrected body, He gave instruction to His disciples to prepare for the feast of Passover, the Last Supper. The Passover necessarily means killing and eating lamb, which symbolised His own death on the cross as the final sacrifice for sin.
7 Then came the day of Unleavened Bread, on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. 8 So Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat it.” 9 They said to him, “Where will you have us prepare it?” 10 He said to them, “Behold, when you have entered the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him into the house that he enters 11 and tell the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’
Luke 22:7-11 ESV
This means Jesus ate lamb meat at the Passover meal. He was hardly a vegetarian and definitely not a vegan. Anyone who claims that He was does not understand the message of the gospel in the sacrifice of a lamb at Passover.
Now there is also the resulting behaviour in the followers of Christ recorded in Romans 14. There had developed a dispute about those who only ate vegetables. Those who ate meat and vegetables were admonished by the Lord through the Apostle Paul to not despise those who only ate vegetables. And visa-versa.
1 And receive the one who is weak in the faith, not to judgments of thoughts.
2 One indeed believes to eat all things, but being weak, another one eats vegetables. 3 The one eating, do not despise the one not eating. And the one not eating, do not judge the one eating, for God received him. 4 Who are you judging another’s servant? To his own master he stands or falls. But he will stand, for God is able to make him stand. 5 One indeed judges a day above another day; and another one judges every day alike. Let each one be fully assured in his own mind. 6 The one being mindful of the day, he is mindful of it to the Lord. And the one not being mindful of the day, he is not mindful of it to the Lord. The one eating, he eats to the Lord; for he gives thanks to God. And the one not eating, he does not eat to the Lord, and gives thanks to God.Romans 14:1-6 KJ3
Christ’s instruction to the believers is to not judge another if he eats or does not eat meat or only vegetables. It is morally the same as not judging another for worshipping on Saturday or on Sunday or any other day of the week. The early church worshipped on both days as some as Jews still had the habit of Saturday worship. Others followed God’s instruction and met for fellowship and worship on the Lord’s day, Sunday.
Therefore the issue of being vegan or vegetarian in God’s eyes is spiritually and morally irrelevant. Just as it does not matter which day you fellowship with the brethren. But it is important not to be lifted up in pride as if it is more moral to only eat vegetables. That would be the Satanic spirit of veganism.
