An Australian Federal Court ordered a series of Islamic preacher Wissam Haddad’s lectures be removed from social media and for corrections to be made. Justice Angus Stewart today found the speeches contravened the Racial Discrimination Act and rejected Mr Haddad’s defences.
The content the judge ordered to be taken down and corrected where the Islamic preacher characterised and criticised Jewish people using “disparaging imputations” that were based on race or ethnic origin, and were reasonably likely to offend, insult, humiliate and intimidate Jews in Australia.
As a follower of Jesus Christ I agree with the judge’s finding. But what is very significant to me and to my academic writings here on the political state of Israel is what the court also found.
The court found passages in an interview and sermon by Mr Haddad contained critical and disparaging things about the actions of the Israel Defense Forces in Gaza and about Zionists.
However, the judge found the “ordinary, reasonable listener” would not understand those things to be about Jewish people in general.
“That person would understand that not all Jews are Zionists and that disparagement of Zionism constitutes disparagement of a philosophy or ideology and not a race or ethnic group,” Justice Stewart said.
“Also, political criticism of Israel, however inflammatory or adversarial, is not by its nature criticism of Jews in general or based on Jewish racial or ethnic identity.
“The conclusion that it is not antisemitic to criticise Israel is the corollary of the conclusion that to blame Jews for the actions of Israel is antisemitic; the one flows from the other.” (my emphases added)
In summary, these are the most significant findings of the Australian Federal Court judge:
- “Political criticism of Israel, however inflammatory or adversarial, is not by its nature criticism of Jews in general or based on Jewish racial or ethnic identity.”
- “Disparagement of Zionism constitutes disparagement of a philosophy or ideology and not a race or ethnic group.”
Considering the recent passing of new Australian hate crime Criminal Code Amendment (Hate Crimes) Bill 2025, and the existing Racial Discrimination Act, this decision is common sense relief.
Criticising the political entity known as Israel is not a criticism of Jews in general, nor is it based on Jewish racial or ethnic identity. Many Jews are anti-Zionists themselves. Anti-Zionism cannot equated with antisemitism.
One must be free to criticise politicians from any country. That is not a criticism of their race or ethnicity but of their actions. The media were once the only bulwark against corrupt politicians but nowadays the media is largely owned by the politicians they serve.
I personally find the actions of Israeli Knesset to be absolutely abhorrent and antihuman as they continue to promote genocide in Gaza and the West Bank against defenceless non-combatant Palestinians who are both Muslim and Christian Arabs.
Shooting desperate starving unarmed people as they come for food is not the action of the “most moral army in the world”.
By April 2025, the Gaza Health Ministry had reported that at least 50,500 people in the Gaza Strip had been killed—1 out of every 44 people—averaging 93 deaths per day. Most of the victims are civilians, of whom at least 50% are women and children. … The number of injured is greater than 100,000; Gaza has the most child amputees per capita in the world.
Other reports put the figure as high as 20% of the original 2.2 million population of Gaza. That is 400,000 casualties, many still missing under the rubble, in the most barbaric war in modern times. But these numbers are disputed.
And does it really matter whether it is 200,000 or 400,000 dead and missing? Where is the United Nations? Where are the humanitarians? Very few in the West to be found.
In November 2023, Israeli Heritage Minister Amichai Eliyahu, a member of the far-right Otzma Yehudit party, sparked controversy by suggesting that using a nuclear bomb on the Gaza Strip was “one of the possibilities” during an interview with Israeli radio. Here he is on YouTube.
Eliyahu later reiterated his hardline stance, stating that even the International Court of Justice (ICJ) was aware of his position on using extreme measures against Gaza. His comments came amid heightened tensions during the Gaza war and were met with both domestic and international criticism.
Of course this is an admission that Israel has nuclear weapons and that they are prepared to use them.
For more than 30 years Israeli PM Netanyahu has been warning that Iran is only weeks away from their own nuclear bomb, but Iran has not had any nuclear program since 2003 when the supreme leader Khomeini decreed a religious fatwa banning such weapons.
June 13th 2025 Israel unprovoked committed aggression against the sovereign nation of Iran on the pretext that they needed to stop them building a nuclear bomb. But why does Israel get to have them and not Iran when the latter is and the former is not a signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT)?
In the eyes of most of the world Israel is a pariah state, a rogue state out of control, attacking and bombing 5 of its neighbours: Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, Yemen and Iran. Is this part of the Greater Israel project? Who is next? Egypt? Türkiye?
The word pariah has the meaning of an outcast; one despised by society.
As of the latest available information, over 50 countries support South Africa’s genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), indicating their stance against the alleged Gaza genocide.
Additionally, several countries have officially recognized the situation in Gaza as genocide, including Afghanistan, Algeria, Bangladesh, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Djibouti, Egypt, Guyana, Honduras, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Ireland, Jordan, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Libya, Malaysia, Maldives, Mauritania, and Namibia.
Some countries, such as Belgium and Canada, have not officially recognized it as genocide but have expressed concerns or are awaiting the ICJ’s verdict.
Where are the rest of the allegedly once civilised Western countries? They support the genocide! They support the barbarism! They supply arms and munitions to bomb starving Gazan refugees in their tents.
Being against genocide and barbarism is not being antisemitic. Many secular and orthodox Jews are also against this. They are some of the finest people on the planet, who have been exposing this evil for a long time. Read Prof. Jeffrey Sachs on Saving Israel by Ending Its War in Gaza.
The evil the Israeli government commits against Palestinians is not because as claim that they are Jews, God’s chosen people. No, … it is because of their evil hearts and their evil ideology.
They fit the description of inhuman Zionists, who could be from anywhere in the world, however the majority are from the US evangelical churches — the Christian Zionists.
