Next week (January 19th 2026) the Prime Minister of Australia will recall the federal parliament for the sole purpose of pushing through in 2 days new draconian anti-free-speech-thought-control laws. The “Combatting Antisemitism, Hate & Extremism Bill 2026” introduces concepts that are truly frightening.
The worse part of this Bill is that the draft legislation against hate crimes includes actions that occurred before the commencement of the new law, which were perfectly legal at the time the alleged crime happened, was spoken, or thought.
My friend and law professor wrote this to me about these new laws (my emphasis add):
This is absolutely outrageous. It’s another evidence that the rule of law is dead and buried in Australia. The proper movement of law is forward in time. Retrospective law is something akin to deeply authoritarian regimes. After all, how can one comply with a law when such a law did not even exist at the time the action is committed?
We are living in perilous times.
It is Orwellian thought policing. To be punished for your thoughts not even spoken but, because if said, they might cause offence. You can see how political thought and speech could be censored with this.
If this law passes, which it will, it is the end of free speech in Australia.
The new laws are to control our speech.
- Hatred towards persons because of race, colour or ethnicity is already covered by existing laws but now that is expanded to include any nationality. That means it will be a crime to express hatred towards a foreign government’s leader(s) for whatever reason, even true and just reasons.
- No offence needs to have occurred, only that a “reasonable person” would take offence, feel fear or be intimidated, then it is a crime. The risk of an offence is enough.
- No hate crime conviction is necessary for the Minister to conclude that an organisation has been engaged in a hate crime.
- No procedural fairness; that is a concept in the Westminster system of lawmaking. Now there will be no procedural fairness — openly stated.

Every Australian must raise their voice and oppose this rushed disgraceful piece of legislation.
With the ‘Religious text exemption’ Albanese’s so-called “Hate Speech” legislation will give legislative protection to Islamic Extremists to have discussions about “besieging, capturing and killing”.

This Bill will have damaging, permanent effects on what you are allowed to say.
I am absolutely against all forms of hate speech, vilification of any human persons based on any criteria and incitement to violence for any reason. It is un-Christ like.
But how will politicians, governments and other hateful persons against Christ use such laws when there is no concise definition of what hate speech is, or, that only conditions are set for it to occur when it has not even been spoken, written or thought. Will the basis of Christian morality as taught by Christ in the New Testament be outlawed as hate speech? Afterall Jesus was not woke friendly, nor was He friendly to the antichrist doctrines of the religious leaders in His time.
Jesus said that because they hated Him they will also hate us, those who follow Christ (John 15:18). I can easily see how such laws could be used to target Christians and especially those who follow Christ and preach His word.
18 If the world hate you, you know that it hated me before it hated you. 19 If you were of the world, the world would love his own: but because you are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 20 Remember the word that I said to you, The servant is not greater than his lord. Therefore I have to state the following:
Unless these draconian anti-speech laws are cancelled or not enacted next week or some time after that, I will no longer be discussing any subject on this site that might be construed as hateful to one person, group or another. Self-censored.
The content of my subjects will change for sure, because even after reading the proposed Bill I am totally unsure what I could express as an academic in scholarly discussions on politics, religion or current affairs.

But He still only lasted in public ministry for 3½ years before His political and religious enemies had Him tried (not convicted) and crucified as a common criminal.
