Nowadays I see the common misuse of the symbol ‘8:32’. It is used in relation to truth and freedom from tyranny. Don’t get me wrong here, I completely identify with those who aspire to truth and freedom and individual liberty.
I am now more of a libertarian than I have ever been before. I believe that ‘anarchy’, in the true libertarian meaning, is the best form of local government. That is local with individual freedom and liberty. Not big oppressive centralised government and tyranny as they most tend to, eventually.
But those who often bear or carry the label ‘8:32’ do not use it or even understand what it truly means because perhaps they don’t know its origin.
The following reports the words spoken by our Lord Jesus Christ (my emphases added)
30 As He spoke these words, many believed on Him. 31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on Him, If you continue in My word, then are you My disciples indeed; 32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
John 8:30-32
The context is that these words were spoken to believers, those who put their trust in our Lord and His word. Those who today would study and follow His teachings.
Only through knowing Christ can you be free. That freedom is not political freedom. Jesus never offered that. It is freedom of your soul. The condition though is that you trust in Him, for your life and your soul.
At that time when Jesus said this there was a small group who did accepted Him as Messiah because some believed on Him. But when Jesus said this He was speaking to a larger group of the Pharisee sect of the Jews. They were His enemies and they still are today. Yet they claimed to be children of Abraham.
33 They answered Him, We be Abraham’s seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how say you, You shall be made free?
John 8:33-36
34 Jesus answered them, Truly, truly, I say to you, Whoever commits sin is the servant of sin. 35 And the servant stays not in the house for ever: but the Son stays ever. 36 If the Son therefore shall make you free, you shall be free indeed.
They claimed flesh and blood lineage from Abraham implying that that is what saves them. That just being Abraham’s offspring was enough to redeem their eternal soul.
37 I know that you are Abraham’s seed; but you seek to kill Me, because My word has no place in you.
John 8:37
Jesus acknowledges that they are physically offspring of Abraham but that they are not children of God. Without the Son they have no access to the Father. Only through the Son can we be truly free.
6 Jesus said …, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man comes to the Father, but by Me. 7 If you had known Me, you should have known My Father also: and from now on you know Him, and have seen Him.
John 14:6-7
Without Christ it does not matter who you are or where you are from you cannot be saved from eternal wrath to come. And you certainly cannot know the Father without knowing Jesus Christ.
38 I speak that which I have seen with My Father: and you do that which you have seen with your father.
John 8:38
There are only 2 non-overlapping paths. There is one path to the truth and the freedom of the soul and the other to the lie and bondage of the soul.
That means there is no secular neutral path to follow to reach eternal truth and freedom. The offer of such a pathway is a lie and a deception of the Evil One. Jesus said this Evil One is the father of the Pharisees. The Pharisees are all those who are religious but not for Christ. They follow their own works to attain what they believe is their own righteousness. That is Satanic and evil.
They want the fruits of liberty that God offers but without the Son of God.
39 They answered and said to him, Abraham is our father. Jesus said to them, If you were Abraham’s children, you would do the works of Abraham. 40 But now you seek to kill me, a man that has told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham. 41 You do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God.
John 8:39-41
These are Satanic Jews who are not children of Abraham. If they were they would know Jesus Christ who is the seed of Abraham. But instead they conspired to kill Jesus. They were operating under the influence of Satan their father. They still are today.
42 Jesus said to them, If God were your Father, you would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but He sent me. 43 Why do you not understand My speech? even because you cannot hear My word. 44 You are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father you will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and stayed not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
John 8:42-44
Plainly put, Jesus told them they are operating under the lusts and desires of their father the devil.
I see the same problems today. There are some who wear the badge of ‘8:32’ but they are not of God. They operate according to their father the devil. They lie and deceive and war within the ‘freedom’ groups that seek freedom from oppression.
These often appear to be political and express views of freedom and liberty. But they attack one another within those freedom groups, whether they be in a political party or not.
Often causing division, they appear to be righteous but in their own righteousness, not the Lord’s. They despise those who love the Lord, like they are some sort of religious nutcases.
You can only be in one camp. If you are not Christ’s you are not free. You are promoting the lies of Satan. There is no other possibility.
45 And because I tell you the truth, you believe Me not. 46 Which of you convinces Me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do you not believe Me? 47 He that is of God hears God’s words: you therefore hear them not, because you are not of God.
John 8:45-47
