What I saw while under the surgery as my lens was being replaced. I am still working on this painting and will replace this with a newer version when I finish it.

Recently I underwent cataract surgery and had a new lens inserted into my right eye. I was given only a local anesthetic so I was fully aware of what the surgeon was doing but I felt no pain. He removed my cataract filled lens and replaced it with a new synthetic lens. The surgery took no more than 15 minutes.

The amazing thing was that what I saw when he was doing this was almost heavenly, with beautiful colours and a bright light. The above picture is my feeble attempt (so far) to capture what I saw.

A few days after the surgery, after I removed the protective covering, when looking at the light coming in through my window I saw such a brilliant difference with my ‘new eye’. The blues were so bright and beautiful. The colours were much more vibrant.

Now I could see that the ‘old eye’, the other one still with cataracts, was seeing everything with a yellowish tinge. Blues were more greenish. My new eye, though still single (only one corrected so far), had the scales (cataracts) removed. I could see much more clearly than I had done before.

Not only that, I could not tell until I had the cataracts (the scales) removed from my right eye that I was not correctly perceiving the world as it truly is. The changes over time are so gradual that you do not perceive them. In relation to this, the following came to mind.

22 The light of the body is the eye: if therefore your eye be single [Greek: haplous], your whole body shall be full of light. 23 But if your eye be evil, your whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you be darkness, how great is that darkness!

Matthew 6:22-23

The Greek word translated ‘single’ in the KJV is ἁπλοῦς (haplous). It has the following meanings.

  1. (properly) folded together, i.e. single.
  2. (figuratively) clear.

Both meanings are applicable.

Your eyes are really part of your brain because they are directly connected to your brain through optical fibres we call the Optic nerve. If your eye has no impediment, like cataracts, to conduct the light entering the eye to the brain, then it is clear, or whole, that is, healthy and working as it should. Your brain then perceives the world as God intended you to do so. Then your whole body (really your brain) is ‘full of light’ because all the light gets through to the brain without being blocked.

Cross section of the eye

Note how the lens is held within a capsule connected by muscles and zonular fibres behind the Iris. The capsule comprises a series of fine fibers that attach to the margin of the lens and arise from the orbicularis ciliaris of the ciliary body. They extend to the lens in an anterior, posterior, and equatorial grouping. Additionally, the ciliary muscles and zonal fibers within the eye work together to hold the lens in place. The ciliary muscles contract and relax to change the shape of the lens, while the zonal fibers provide the tension necessary to keep it in place.

Using a laser the surgeon cuts open the capsule, the old lens is removed, and a synthetic lens is inserted. Over time the capsule, comprised of those fibres, pulls tighter around the lens and your vision improves. This means the layers of the fibres must be properly folded around the new lens. They must be ‘folded together’ which is the proper meaning of the Greek word used in the above text.

Besides the obvious physical meaning of Matthew 6:22, removing the scales from your eyes like the Apostle Paul experienced (Acts 9) has the meaning of removing the delusion from your mind and seeing God’s revelation (His message) in the true light of His Word.

In my case it was a surgeon who removed the ‘scales’, the cataracts from my eye, but spiritually it is the Holy Spirit Who removes the scales so that we may see the truth. In this regard there are many Christians right now under mass delusion, who cannot see the truth and need the scales removed from their eyes. We should pray for the Lord to help them see more clearly.

And to those who do not yet trust in Jesus Christ, their ‘eye is evil’ (Matthew 6:23). That is, they have cataracts blocking out what they could see, and no light enters their brain. Their body is full of darkness. Only the Holy Spirit can remove the metaphorical cataracts and bring life to their soul.

Ananias was sent by the Lord Jesus to Paul to help facilitate the removal of the scales from his eyes. In this case, Ananias was merely a tool in God’s hand.

17 Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared to you in the way as you came, has sent me, that you might receive your sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost. 18 And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight immediately, and arose, and was baptized.

Acts 9:17b-18

Prior to this Paul was blind, his body was full of darkness, full of evil. He was engaged in persecution of the followers of Christ (Acts 9:3). After the scales were removed he was born again and his body was filled with the light of the Holy Spirit and he became God’s Apostle.

To those who reject Jesus Christ, Son of God, in their lives, how great is that darkness. Their whole body is full of darkness. This means they cannot see the truth of the gospel.

I believe this also applies by degree to those who may trust in Jesus Christ but who resist some cataracts being removed from their eyes. They do not let the Surgeon remove them and as a result they do not see and experience the full freedom that the Spirit of God provides. Some delusion remains.

18 The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, and what the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints [the believers],

Ephesians 1:18

8 For by grace are you saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Ephesians 2:8-9
