The universe, comprised of the heavens and the earth, came into existence, out of nothing, when God created all space, time and energy over 6 ordinary days less than 8 thousand years ago. The creation of the universe did not occur 14 billion years ago nor was the planet Earth created or formed 4.5 billion years ago as big bang believers claim.

In the following, and in subsequent related posts, I intend to examine the physics of each day as God proceeded in His supernatural ex nihilo creation. Naturally there will be some speculation because creation ex nihilo is not something we know much about. And creation ex nihilo requires supernatural creation. However, as much as possible, I will rely on known physics.

The Bible begins with the very famous line:

1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth;

Genesis 1:1 KJ3

This is a summary statement for all the events that follow. In Hebrew the expression “the heavens and the earth” is a merism, a Hebrew figure of speech that has two contrasting parts that form a whole. Thus it was the entire universe that God created on and after Day 1.

This means He created space for all the energy in the universe to exist. Therefore He also created time for it to exist. Energy is related to time or more correctly a rate of change in time.

An empty vacuum is nothing. You could not define space without something in it. Therefore the moment God created space He concomitantly created energy in space, that is the energy of the vacuum. That is often referred to as the zero point energy of the vacuum.

Thus it also follows that if the vacuum contains zero point energy, then time exists. So that means concomitantly God created time with the vacuum of space.

2 and the earth being without form and empty [void], and darkness being on the face of the deep, and the Spirit of God hovering on the face of the waters,

Genesis 1:2 KJ3

Initially the creation starts with water in no particular shape (“without form”). It was empty of all life and form. The Hebrew word בֹּהוּ bohuw, translated ’empty’ and also ‘void’ (in KJV, ESV), means “a void, vacuity,” where vacuity has the meanings:

  1. Total absence of matter; emptiness.
  2. An empty space; a vacuum.

This means God started with a formless earth created in a vacuum. In my Fig. 1 I have tried to illustrate this as a chaotic conglomeration of water.

Plain H2O! We can conclude that it must have been water, because of the expression “the face of the deep”. The Hebrew word used there is תְּהֹם thom meaning:

  1. an abyss (as a surging mass of water).
  2. (especially) the deep (the main sea or the subterranean water-supply).

In addition we have the phrase “the Spirit of God hovering on the face of the waters” where the Hebrew word used מַיִם mayim means ‘water’. God begins with water, from which He creates the earth with plenty of water and oxygen.

Initially it would have been a lot of water because it may have been all the matter from which God made everything else in the solar system.

If you start with a cloud of water floating in space what happens to it?

Here the clue is in the ‘hovering’. The Hebrew word used there is רָחַף rachaph which means to ‘brood’.

I suggest this has very definite creation meaning. God’s Spirit brooding over the waters charged them with mass/energy content. Hovering or brooding is superintending over the creation. Perhaps it even has the notion of energising the matter, giving it mass, both gravitational and inertial.

Figure 1: Creation Day 1 — Cloud of water. Art by Gideon

Gravitational matter gravitates. It falls towards the centre of mass.

Therefore the initial cloud of chaotic water collapsed as indicated in Fig. 1 by the arrows pointing towards the centre of the cloud. And because God created the universe with 3 spatial dimensions the cloud of water naturally formed into a sphere.

The sphericity of the resulting ball of water is a property of the dimensionality of space, that is, because space is 3 dimensional and not 2 or 4 dimensional. See Earth | A Sphere By Design.

And as you might know from watching an ice skater pirouetting, as the cloud was collapsing it spun faster and faster. This is the result of conservation of angular momentum. The spin vector is determined by the net motion within the cloud in either a clockwise or counter clockwise direction.

Rotation is a property of special creation because random motion in the cloud would favour no net angular momentum vector in the resulting sphere. And note all large celestial bodies have rotational motion.

Thus we get a large sphere of rotating water.

The collapse of the cloud stops at some point when the outward pressure of the cloud, which has become a sphere of water, is equal to the pressure exerted by the combined gravitational force of all the matter in the sphere. There is no other matter anywhere in the universe at this time.

3 and God said, Let light be! And there was light.

Genesis 1:3 KJ3

That is the next creative act of God. This illustrates that He created by uttering His words. “Let light be!” or “Let there be light!”

The physicality of creating light means all of the energy in the electromagnetic spectrum, from radio waves to gamma rays. We tend to think of light only as that in the visible part of the spectrum but it must include all energy.

The act of creating matter, consisting of atoms, comprised of subatomic particles must also mean the creation of electromagnetic energy. So that was at the same time as the matter creation.

Perhaps, by uttering “Let light be!” God was making note of the optical energy being generated from the sphere of water, which is called Earth, ironically because so far there is no actual earth (soil, rocks) there.

Sonoluminescence is the emission of a burst of light from collapsing bubbles in a liquid when excited by sound. It occurs when a sound wave of sufficient intensity induces a gaseous cavity within a liquid to collapse quickly, emitting a burst of visible light.

The formation of a cavity in water is similar to cavitation generated by a rotating propeller. The propeller creates an acoustic wave in the water, which creates a gaseous cavity that collapses quickly enough to boil the water.

Thus when God said, that is, He spoke to the sphere of water in such a way that generated a cavity (or cavities), which when it collapsed it generated a massive burst of light. “And there was light”.

Thus we get the sphere illustrated in Fig. 2, spinning and being lit from within.

Figure 2: Creation Day 1 — Spinning sphere of magnetised water. Art by Gideon

At this stage we have an energised sphere of water, with light bursting out of it, separating the darkness from the light.

4 And God saw the light, that it was good, and God separated between the light and between the darkness.

Genesis 1:4 KJ3

God uses light as a metaphor of His goodness and darkness as a metaphor of wickedness. The absence of light is darkness. The absence of God’s goodness is therefore wickedness.

At this stage there is no darkness because God’s light from His spoken words fills the darkness with light.

The light includes all electromagnetic energy. It follows then that the earth here carries a magnetic field.

Under normal conditions a magnetic field is supported by a circulating current. And remember so far the earth is all water, H2O. But note water molecules are comprised of Oxygen and Hydrogen atoms.

Each Hydrogen atom has one proton in its nucleus. If God supernaturally aligned the spin axes of all those protons then you get a net magnetic field dipole. For symmetry reasons the dipole would be aligned to the spin axis of the sphere. Dr Russ Humphreys suggested this idea a long time ago and used it make successful predictions of the magnetic fields of a few planets in the solar system before they were measured by a magnetometer on a space probe.

Thus I have drawn magnetic field lines on the sphere of the earth. Later we’ll get to the formation of the other planets on Day 4. But if they all were made with some of this polarised material, magnetised water, from earth of Day 1 then we’d expect the magnetic fields of the planets to be essentially aligned throughout the solar system.

Surprisingly Mercury was found to have a weak magnetic field when it was expected to have none based on the believed 5-billion-year age of the solar system. Mars and Venus do not have a significant magnetic field. Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune all have magnetic fields much stronger than that of Earth. Uranus is really odd with its rotation axis in the plane of the ecliptic and its magnetic field axis 60 degrees off that.

At the end of the creation Day 1, God again used a merism, “evening and morning” meaning a 24-hour day. Compare with Exodus 20:11.

5 And God called the light, Day. And He called the darkness, Night. And it was evening, and it was morning, day one.

Genesis 1:5 KJ3

But there is no sun and no sunlight to divide the Day side of the planet Earth from the Night side.

Creationists have suggested God created a light source to produce the effect until God created the sun on Day 4. Perhaps that is correct. But perhaps this was a looking forward to Day 4 when the sun was made, and the Day-Night cycle commenced.

The main point of the use of this particular merism is that this Day 1 lasted for 24 hours only. It is the same length of time as all creation days.

Thus the rotation speed of this water sphere (earth) means one rotation per 24-hour day. That time period is defined by reference to the Days 4 through 6 when the sun supplied the illumination source.

But time itself is not defined by the rotation of the sphere. It is defined by the electronic frequency of the atomic energy levels in the atoms, and therefore the wavelengths of light emissions. Stable atoms means stable frequencies and wavelengths. The colours of light emissions are fixed and unchanging.

Time started at the first moment of creation, not with creation of the sun or sunlight, nor by some other source of light substituted for the sun before Day 4. Thus we can conclude that the use of Hebrew form of “evening and morning” is a statement of the period of what we know now as a normal 24-hour day.

This is especially reinforced by the use of ordinal numbers for each day (second, third etc). Some translations have “first day” (KJV, ESV) in Genesis1:5 but the correct rendering is found in the KJ3 where “day one” is written.

One day is defined for the first day and the rest are counted off with ordinal numbers, second day, third day etc. It could not be any clearer.

Now we know that the space around us, in the solar system is bathed in what is called the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation.

Humans have not sent out space probes beyond the solar system to measure the radio noise from space out there. So observationally we only know it exists in our region of space. But what is it?

The CMB background radio noise can be modelled as blackbody radiation with a peak wavelength around 1 mm (1000 micrometres), hence the use of the term microwave. It therefore has a thermal temperature of about 3 K. The big bangers believe that it is an ‘afterglow’ or ‘echo’ of the big bang. But that is mere speculation.

Well, let me speculate also!

What if it is evidence of the creation of the sphere of water on Day 1?

That is, the earth is created as liquid water in the vacuum of space. It rapidly forms into a sphere and freezes, cooling to 3 K, coming into thermal equilibrium with the space it occupies.

Some water is boiled off initially and blown into space, but that takes heat from the sphere.

Cooling take place at the speed of sound in the sphere. Considering the length of time in a 24-hour day and an acoustic speed in liquid water of 1500 m/s (independent of pressure), a maximum sound horizon of 130,000 km means the volume of the water could have been 1000 times the present volume of the earth. More on that in Day 2.

The thermal radiation of the sphere at uniform temperature is isotropic and close to that of a blackbody at 3 K. It travels out into space at the speed of light since creation, covering around 6,000 light-years, which means it is still very local to our region of space. No expansion of space is considered.

This thermal radiation then may well be the signature of creation. “Let light be”! must include all radiation even at millimetre wavelengths of the CMB radiation.

By the end of Day 1 of creation we have what I have illustrated in Fig. 2: a very large sphere of rotating magnetised water cooled to 3 K.

Stay tuned for Day 2 ….

  1. Good alternate explanation for the cosmic microwave background: “This thermal radiation then may well be the signature of creation.”

How might one determine how far away that CMB actually is?

We disagree about the age of the universe. Since there are biblical texts that place it further than 6000 years and we do not have the original autographs anymore, it is more appropriate to say that creation occurred less than 8000 years ago. That would cover all the texts.

    1. If CMB is local as I suggest it does not make sense to say how far its source is. In big bang cosmology it is assumed to be at redshift z = 1000 in an expanding universe and therefore its source is everywhere. But if cosmological redshift is not due to expansion then that is also wrong.

I am not dogmatic on 6000 so I’ll insert as you suggest.
