The third Day of creation brings with it the unique origin of life on Earth as well as the origin of dry land. On this Day God created the continental land mass on which He created life in the form of green plants.

The big question for the unbelieving world is the origin of life itself. We all can recognise life when we see it but evolutionary scientists have a hard time defining it because they see no hard demarcation between minerals and living organisms. Both non-living minerals and living carbon-based lifeforms were created on Day 3.

Here I continue with a discussion on the physics of the days of creation. I look specifically at the events of Day 3 of the beginning of the universe. Please read The Physics of Creation | Day 1 and Day 2 before reading this post.

Dry Land

9 And God said, Let the waters under the heavens be collected to one place, and let the dry land be seen. And it was so. 10 And God called the dry land, Earth. And He called the collection of the waters, Seas. And God saw that it was good.

Genesis 1:9-10 KJ3

From Day 2 recall there were the ‘waters above’ and ‘waters below’ the expanse (Hebrew: raqiya). The ‘waters below’ are the waters under the heavens because God called the expanse Heavens (Genesis 1:8).

Therefore the message here now is that God collects the waters of the part of the earth under the heavens together into one place and exposes the dry land of the continent. It is possible that this meant a single large continent.

On Day 2 the earth consisted only of water, and I have suggested frozen water, that is, ice. To create the land mass the Creator had to create all the foundations of our rocky planet, Earth. The concept of dry land involves the definition of The Land, derived from the Hebrew word אֶרֶץ ‘erets. God called it Earth.

God asked Job:

4 Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth [erets]? declare, if you have understanding.

Job 38:4 AKJV

Of course that was a rhetorical question, but it indicates that at some time in the past God created the foundations, the layers of rock, which comprise the basement rocks of the planet.

5 He founded the earth [erets] on its foundations; it shall not be shaken forever and ever.

Psalm 104:5 KJ3

The promise here is that those foundations are permanent. What are the foundations like? The core, mantle and crust of the earth. See Fig. 1. This is what we know about the insides of the earth today.

Figure 1: Earth cut away to core. By IsadoraofIbiza Wikipedia

When the scriptures reported that the earth shall not be shaken they do not mean it cannot move like in an earthquake as tectonic plates move, but that it is stable and will not be destroyed. Such are the foundations.

Today we have a lot of vulcanism, and earthquakes. These are the aftermath of the global deluge, which took place more than 1600 years after the creation.

22 For a fire is kindled in my anger, and shall burn to the lowest hell, and shall consume the earth with her increase, and set on fire the foundations of the mountains [volcanos].

Deuteronomy 32:21 AKJV

To create all the rocks in the inner parts of the planet from water the Creator had to convert a lot of Oxygen into heavier elements. Just look at the Periodic Table and note Oxygen (symbol O) has an atomic number 8, which means most elements are heavier.

Figure 2: Periodic Table. Source: Wikipedia

That means the Creator needed to fuse elements heavier than Oxygen which is most of them. Perhaps He fused the elements with atomic numbers from 2 to 7 from the Hydrogen from the initial water of creation. By whatever means He did it, it was a supernatural act.

Water is an essential ingredient for life. Every cell of every living organism with the breath of life in it has water in its cells. For all life, without exception, Oxygen is essential. It is no wonder then that the Creator started with water, which is comprised of a lot of Oxygen.

From the initial water earth God disassociated some into Oxygen and Hydrogen to form the atmospheric gases. Probably this occurred on this Day 3 as the planet was heated by the fusion processes to create the rocks.

Thus the frozen water planet at 3 K becomes a very hot planet with a solid inner core of metals. The inner core was discovered in 1936 by Inge Lehmann and is generally composed primarily of iron and some nickel. Since this layer is able to transmit shear waves (transverse seismic waves), it must be solid. The depth of the inner core is about 1,220 km and comprises about 0.8% of the volume of the earth. The temperature at its surface is estimated to be approximately 5,700 K, about the temperature at the surface of the Sun. It is solid due to the extremely high pressure.

Earth’s outer core is a fluid layer about 2,257 km in depth from the outer to inner surface where it meets the solid inner core. It comprises about 15.6% of the volume of the earth. It is composed of mostly iron and nickel. See Fig. 1.

The Earth’s magnetic field strength is exponentially decaying. Ever since it was first measured, it has been decreasing. In 1833 the German scientist Carl Friedrich Gauss invented an instrument and measured the Earth’s magnetic-field strength, defining it at about one gauss.

Long earth-age evolutionary scientists believe in a dynamo theory to keep the magnetic field strong enough to survive the 5 billion years of their alleged Earth history. But the observational data do not support that. Instead observational measurements support the free decay of a circulating current in the liquid metal of the outer core of the planet.

Figure 3: Electrical resistance in the earth’s core wears down the electric current which produces the earth’s magnetic field. That causes the earth’s magnetic field to lose energy.

A free decay means energy is exponentially lost, since the outer core is not superconducting, and has a finite electrical resistance. As the circulating electric current meets that resistance, energy is lost as heat, according to Ohm’s law. The Second Law of Thermodynamics tells us that this must happen. Thus the creation model here explains the observed decay over the past 190 years.

The Moon and Sun cause tides in the liquid outer core, just as they do in the oceans on the surface of Earth. The dissipative energy loss in the outer core damps down those tidal motions, which explain the detected anomalies in Earth’s nutation.

Nutation is a rocking or swaying motion in the axis of rotation of a planet. See Fig. 4.

Figure 4: Nutation of a spinning sphere

The mantle is the layer above the inner core and contains magma, the liquid rocks that spew out of volcanos. The mantle extends to a depth of 2,883 km, and comprises 83.6% of the volume of the Earth. The crust on top of that is only 0.6% of the volume.

The mantle is composed of silicate rocks richer in iron and magnesium than the overlying crust. Silicates mean Oxygen chemically bound in the rocks. But also it is well known that up about 10 times the water that is on the surface of the earth now is bound in those mantle rocks.

Chemical compounds, in the earth, including water, Iron Oxides, and Calcium Carbonates, produce a primordial source of petroleum extracted to today. Deep in the mantle chemical reactions rapidly cook up gases like Methane and other Alkanes to create a hydrocarbon fuel source for humans, providentially provided by the Creator. Peak oil is a myth!

The Creator’s design plan also included the crustal layers, the continental plates which include the ocean floor. They were created in an unstable equilibrium state. That equilibrium was broken at the beginning of the great flood. Suffice to say here that the rock layers God created were part of His design plan. I’ll discuss more on this in the chapter on the great deluge.

Green Life

11 And God said, Let the earth cause to sprout grass, the plant seeding seed, the fruit tree producing fruit according to its kind, which seed is in it on the earth. And it was so. 12 And the earth bore grass, the green plant seeding seed according to its kind, and the fruit tree producing fruit according to its kind, which seed is in it. And God saw that it was good. 13 And it was evening, and it was morning, a third day

Genesis 1:11-13 KJ3

And “the earth bore grass” describes the creation of green plant life in the form of grasses, which must include all grasses including sea grasses. They will be the food of the sea creatures created on Day 5.

The green plants was created bearing their own seeds to reproduce according to their kind. This is the old ‘chicken and egg’ problem solved. The adult plants were first created with their own seeds according to their kind. In reality it was the Creator who came first followed by the adult plants with seeds created in them.

The diversity of life today results from the form which the Creator started off with. By creating genetically diverse organisms, freely reproducing within their kinds, new species would develop according to their future changing habitats. This is exactly what is observed today.

We don’t see plants (or animals) hybridizing into completely different kinds. Speciation occurs but those species can still cross fertilise with others species within their kind. But they cannot fertilise outside of their kind. That is a hard limitation.

Apple trees are cultivated worldwide and are the most widely grown species Malus domestica in the genus Malus. Apparently the tree originated in Central Asia, where its wild ancestor, Malus sieversii, is still found.

Of the Malus domestica apple tree species there are more than 7,500 varieties. They are all included in the same species, which tells you something about the Creator’s intent.

I have one Pink Lady apple tree in my backyard and it is not producing much fruit. So I asked a fruit tree expert and he told me it requires cross-pollination with another apple variety to produce fruit, and a Granny Smith apple tree can serve as an effective pollinator for it.

Was one of these apple trees the special tree of the knowledge of good and evil in the Garden of Eden, which God told Adam and Eve not to eat of? The answer is a definite no, because after they were banished from the Garden we never hear of that tree again.

The importance of the green plants on Day 3 cannot be emphasized enough. The green indicates chlorophyl in the plants, which means the mineral Magnesium is present. This mineral is essential in the photosynthesis process, which means the green plants are converting water and Carbon Dioxide into plant sugars and Oxygen. Read Decarbonise the Planet, Are They Mad?

God had to create the minerals in the crust before creating the green plants. They need sunlight to photosynthesize as the name suggests. And that is no objection to the creation narrative because it was only the next day that God created the sun. That highlights the importance of reading the days of creation as literal 24-hour days.

After creating the dry land of the Earth’s crust and after creating the green plants, in both instances, God said it was good. This means it was perfectly designed creation, fit for purpose, where nothing bad was produced. And there was no Curse on creation until well after this. More on the Curse in a later chapter.

In review, Day1 through 3, the Creator creates the conditions on Earth for sentient animal and human life to exist. He provides His creation with unique control systems, the Water cycle, the Carbon Dioxide / Oxygen cycle and the Nitrogen cycle. These stabilize the natural environment. They will be discussed in a later chapter.

Day 4 completes the necessary environment because the Creator adds the sunlight necessary for plants to photosynthesize sugars and produce Oxygen with Carbon Dioxide as an input.

Stay tuned for Day 4 ….
