Figure 1: Sperm whales sleeping

The seventh Day of creation, the last day of the week is the day of rest, the Sabbath. On this Day the Creator rested from all His labors, from creating and forming everything in the universe. The creation was complete and perfect.

Here I continue with a discussion on the physics of the days of creation. I look specifically at the events of Day 7 of the beginning of the universe. Please read The Physics of Creation | Day 1 to Day 6 before reading this post. (See links at the bottom of this post.)

The Creator designed all creatures to need sleep. When the largest creatures of all creation, sperm whales, need a nap, they take a deep breath, dive down about 15 m (45 feet) and arrange themselves into perfectly-level, vertical patterns similar to those illustrated in Fig.1.

Different species have different sleep methods and requirements and the amount of sleep needed can vary greatly between species. For example, researchers believe that sperm whales spend only ~7% of their day sleeping, usually in short naps of 10-15 minutes at a time! This finding makes sperm whales the species that needs the least amount of sleep in the planet! Giraffes are a close second who spend around 8% of their day in slumber.

The need for rest is part of the design. It is during sleep that the body rejuvenates and repair systems operate. For that reason, not that God needs rest, He rested from His work on the seventh day to set the standard for all creation.

At the end of the creation week the Genesis text reports:

1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.
2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. 3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

Genesis 2:1-3 AKJV

God does not sleep nor does He grow weary.

28 Have you not known? Have you not heard? Jehovah, the everlasting God, the
Creator of the ends of the earth; He is not faint, nor does He grow weary; there is no searching to His understanding.

Isaiah 40:28 KJ3

The Creator is nothing like His creation. He has no body nor does He experience time as we do. Yet He uses the language we are familiar with and “rested from all His work which God created and made”.

That means the creation out of nothing, ex nihilo, ceased. The universe was complete. The laws of physics by which the universe operates were set.

That means the 4 forces, the gravitational force, the weak and strong nuclear forces in the atom and the electromagnetic force were all established. And they had to be established from Day 1.

Energy conservation was established by the end of the creation week. No longer did God create ex nihilo but the total mass/energy content of the universe has remained constant since that day.

The laws of thermodynamics were set by the end of creation week. The 2nd law is the law of decay. As useful energy is used in a system in contact with its surroundings the state of the system experiences an increase in entropy. That means it become more disordered. This law testifies to the wisdom of the Creator. It means only with an intelligent mind can information be created. It can never come from random chance processes. Read Thermodynamics and Creation: A Scientific Perspective.

The Sustaining Power of the Creator must be operating from the end of creation week to reduce the decay processes from the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics. During creation week creative forces are in operation which bring order out of no order. But once that ceased God must have employed this other means to maintain the creation in balance with no net decay.

The perfect paradise of creation means that any disorder created through the normal passage of time when energy is consumed, heat generated and entropy increased must be made up for by the sustaining power of God.

For example, Adam and Eve were created as fully adult humans. Their aging processes were in operation. But if they had resisted the temptation of the Devil and had not sinned against God but still had access to the Tree of Life they would never had died.

From the moment they ate of the forbidden fruit from the Tree of Knowledge they began to die. Their bodies began to slowly break down. Entropy continued to increase but God withdrew some of His sustaining power that would regenerate their cell tissues. This will be explored more in the chapter on the Curse.

The last point to make here is the seven-day week.

God could have created everything in the universe in a flash, in a moment of time. But He chose to create it all in 6 days, and then rested on the 7th day.

From this He instituted the 7-day week. That is comprised of 7 normal 24-hour days. From the beginning there was the 7-day week: 6 days for work and 1 day for rest. That was eventually codified in the law at the time of Moses but that started in the beginning, at the end of creation week.

8 Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy;
9 six days you shall labor and do all your work;
10 and the seventh day is a sabbath to Jehovah your God; you shall not do any
work, …
11 For in six days Jehovah made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all which is in them, and He rested on the seventh day;

Exodus 20:8-11 KJ3

The 24-hour day, the 29.5-day month and the 365-day year are all based on repeating astronomical observations. All over the Earth peoples and nations live by a 7-day week. Yet it is not tied to any repeating astronomical phenomena.

In order for the first humans’ bodies to be rejuvenated they also needed rest, that is, night time sleep. And they needed a rest day, 1 in 7, even though they were created perfect in a perfect paradise.

Figure 2: The creation has a rest every night.

The night time supplies a rest for mankind and for many of the creatures God made. But regardless of when they sleep they all do sleep.

God left off creating at the end of Day 6 however He left His design imprinted on the laws of physics which careful investigation has led us to understand. It was a belief that the universe operated by rational unchanging laws that led Bible believing scientists to discover them.

The Creator is faithful and non-capricious, leaving a legacy in the creation that it supplies all that mankind needs. The Creator does not operate by chance or whim. Life did not arise by chance processes and evolve over billions of years. The creation was initially perfectly designed and even though that changed through Adam’s sin and the Curse we can still see the providential care that God has given us.
