Green politicians and Climate cultists do not understand basic economics? More fundamentally, they seem to have no ability to understand basic physics, particularly the first and second laws of thermodynamics.
The Climate cultists believe that you can mine coal, use the coal to generate electricity in another country, i.e. China, and make steel from iron ore and coal shipped to China with petroleum-powered ships, then return those products as manufactured goods — wind towers and solar panels — which are then used to make electricity cheaper than using the raw coal or petroleum in the first place.
Can you tell me why we load millions of tons of Coal on 100 carriage trains, ship it all the way to China, where THEY burn it for cheap electricity, turn it into windmills, shipped back to Australia where we need hundreds of them that wont last even 20 years, and with all this new infrastructure and batteries they expect us to believe it will make your life CHEAPER? Well if you believe that, I’ve got a bridge in New York to sell you.
The speaker in this video clip seems to be of a based and down-to-earth mind. He understand the basics of the problem. Yet all the green politicians and Climate Change cultists worldwide are rushing to shovel us all into an unsustainable paradigm. And do I hate that word “sustainable” because it carries all those totalitarian overtones but let me explain the problem.
There is no “free lunch”!
Whatever you use as an energy source is only an energy source because thermodynamically it is extracted high up the “food-chain” with low entropy. In physics terms that means the energy density in the material is high and when released that energy is available to do work.
The energy density in coal or petroleum is much higher than in a wind turbine or solar farm. The simple reason for this is entropy. The entropy increase to make a wind turbine or a solar system is much higher than the entropy released getting the coal or petroleum out of the ground.
Entropy can be thought of all the heat generated when energy is released from a fuel source. There are no heatless sources of energy. To make wind turbines and solar panels an enormous amount of heat was generated and lost to the environment. It was essentially wasted in those manufacturing processes. That is the cost of the natural inefficiencies when making stuff.
Burning coal generates heat and we in turn use that to boil water in a steam turbine to generate electricity. But that is not a 100% efficient system yet it is the most efficient in terms of cost.
It is obvious that burning coal, which is abundant, to generate electricity is cheaper than deriving electricity from a wind turbine because of all the intermediate stages for the wind turbine manufacture.
So how could any system of energy production ever produce cheaper electricity than those systems that use the raw materials — coal, gas and petroleum — almost straight out of the ground.
Petroleum needs some processing to turn it to useable diesel or gasoline. For that reason natural gas is more economically viable, because it like coal has minimal processing, and the stuff has a much higher energy density than a wind tower or solar panels.
This is a no-brainer! For that reason it is lost on the politicians who have no idea that you cannot build a “free-lunch” source of electricity. Even nearly free is impossible and as such green electricity is not green. It requires an enormous amount of coal and gas or petroleum to manufacture those stupid things.
