An article in the Daily Mail (17 April 2025) has made the claim that scientists analyzing data from the James Webb Space Telescope have identified what they call compelling evidence suggesting biological activity on exoplanet K2-18b, located 124 light-years away in the constellation Leo. The planet, classified as a “Hycean world,” is believed to be covered by an ocean and has an atmosphere rich in hydrogen.
Key points from the research:
- Researchers from the University of Cambridge detected dimethyl sulfide (DMS) and dimethyl disulfide (DMDS), compounds primarily produced by microbial life on Earth.
- K2-18b orbits within the “habitable zone” of a red dwarf star, where conditions might support life.
- Its atmosphere was previously found to contain methane and carbon dioxide, marking a breakthrough in identifying carbon-based molecules beyond our solar system.
- The detected levels of DMS and DMDS on K2-18b are thousands of times stronger than on Earth, suggesting potential biological activity.
- Scientists emphasize that further observations are needed to confirm the presence of life, as unknown chemical processes might be responsible for the findings.
Experts hail this discovery as a significant moment in the search for extraterrestrial life, potentially bringing humanity closer to answering the question of whether we are alone in the universe.
The news article starts off with the line: “A distant ocean-covered world, teeming with life”. Quite an overstatement! No such thing was found!
What was actually found? Astronomers have detected the spectroscopic signatures of two molecules dimethyl sulfide (DMS) and dimethyl disulfide (DMDS), which are molecules primarily produced by microbial life on Earth.
But their minds have runaway and they imagine a planet covered in an ocean containing microbial life. Why? Because of their evolutionary mind-set. No other reason. If life evolved on Earth some 4 billion years ago, then it must have evolved elsewhere in the universe. So why not on K2-18b?
The news article also states “… the astronomers … have identified huge quantities of chemicals only made by living organisms on Earth.” (My emphasis added.) This is also not true! To make such a claim you need to rule out all other mechanisms. How are you going to do that? At 124 light-year distance?
The reason for these claims is that humans so desperately want to find a reason to reject the Creator of the universe and believe in “little green men as their own creators“.

The imagination that a cell is some simple structure that will assemble itself if the right chemicals are present. The above illustration gives you an hint of the complexity in the cell.
It is patently false to believe that such a structure could spontaneously form in a ocean anywhere in the universe. Such ideas are in the category of fairy-tales.
If the scientists assume that some advanced alien race ‘seeded’ the ocean on K2-18b with such microbial life, then where did that alien race come from? And so on you have “elephants all the way down“.
Let’s not be fooled by the fanciful suggestions of those who deny the Creator.
I can tell you who the aliens really are!
