This may be stunning news! The infamous climate alarmist Bill Gates now slams the “Doomsday” view of the Climate Change Cult.
Arguably, the world’s most infamous billionaire climate alarmist has stunned the world by adopting a surprising change of tone on so-called ‘global warming’ in a setback to the green socialist movement.
On Tuesday, Microsoft founder Bill Gates published a 17-page memo on his website stating that the “doomsday” climate scenario that has been pushed in the past by people like him and Al Gore is wrong.
As TGP readers know, there have been multiple attempts to fool the world into believing that the Earth is about to burn out thanks to fossil fuels.
Now, Gates praises the progress in lowering emissions and criticizes the most extreme climate alarmists for focusing “too much on short-term emissions goals.”
What a shock.
From Gates:
There’s a doomsday view of climate change that goes like this:
In a few decades, cataclysmic climate change will decimate civilization. The evidence is all around us—just look at all the heat waves and storms caused by rising global temperatures. Nothing matters more than limiting the rise in temperature.
Fortunately for all of us, this view is wrong. Although climate change will have serious consequences—particularly for people in the poorest countries—it will not lead to humanity’s demise. People will be able to live and thrive in most places on Earth for the foreseeable future. Emissions projections have gone down, and with the right policies and investments, innovation will allow us to drive emissions down much further.
Unfortunately, the doomsday outlook is causing much of the climate community to focus too much on near-term emissions goals, and it’s diverting resources from the most effective things we should be doing to improve life in a warming world.
However, Gates still makes clear in his memo that he still considers ‘climate change’ a threat.
To be clear: Climate change is a very important problem. It needs to be solved, along with other problems like malaria and malnutrition. Every tenth of a degree of heating that we prevent is hugely beneficial because a stable climate makes it easier to improve people’s lives.
But as ABC reported, Gates believes the best approach now is to prevent deadly diseases and combat poverty rather than quibbling about the Earth warming by tenths of a degree.
“I’ll let the temperature go up 0.1 degree to get rid of malaria, Gates told reporters. “People don’t understand the suffering that exists today.”
Gates said he published his memo in hopes it would have a positive impact on November’s United Nations climate change conference in Belém, Brazil.
Considering how many of these international globalists regard him highly, listening to him now would be a welcome development.
He also made these claims:
Unfortunately, in this case, what’s good for prosperity is bad for the environment. Although wind and solar have gotten cheaper and better, we don’t yet have all the tools we need to meet the growing demand for energy without increasing carbon emissions.
But we will have the tools we need if we focus on innovation. With the right investments and policies in place, over the next ten years we will have new affordable zero-carbon technologies ready to roll out at scale. Add in the impact of the tools we already have, and by the middle of this century emissions will be lower and the gap between poor countries and rich countries will be greatly reduced.
I wasn’t sure this would be possible when Breakthrough Energy was started in 2015 after the Paris agreement. Since then, the progress of Breakthrough companies and others and the acceleration now being provided by the use of artificial intelligence have made me confident that these advances will be ready to scale.
All countries will be able to construct buildings with low-carbon cement and steel. Almost all new cars will be electric. Farms will be more productive and less destructive, using fertilizer created without generating any emissions. Power grids will deliver clean electricity reliably, and energy costs will go down.
Gates speaks a lot of hopium. He wrote “over the next ten years we will have new affordable zero-carbon technologies ready to roll out at scale”. This is without quantification. The key word is ‘affordable’. So far the green energy projects have quintupled electricity bills in most developed nations. So how are they going to be more affordable?
The use of AI is itself a massive problem because it is increasingly evident that AI gets a lot wrong since it is totally dependent on the human input to the databases it has access to. And there is no such thing as sentient superintelligence in the machine. Never can be! See Emergence | Is it the Answer to Artificial Sentient Life?
Secondly, the massive AI datacenters progressively need more and more energy. Some are already building new coal-fired power stations and others are buying nuclear power generating facilities to fuel their energy needs.
I predict that all his predictions in the last paragraph above will fail. The reason is fundamental physics. There is no free lunch. The sources of energy, hydrocarbons particularly, are already the cheapest we will ever have. This is because they are in a low entropy state that is ready to release their internal energy content. All green fuel schemes are horrendously expensive because they attempt to pump energy into their putative product to make it available in some crazy green scheme. Why not use what is there already?
