Christian Zionists seem to believe that no matter how morally bankrupt modern-day Jews are in regards to their lack of faith in their own Messiah Jesus Christ, “all Israel will be saved” because they are “God’s chosen people”. Their tribal ethnicity gives them special status with God for salvation.
Many say that they will still be saved by grace. Nevertheless there are different views among them as to how and when that happens. Some say that when Jesus returns they will see Him and repent and be saved. But that would be salvation by sight and not by faith alone. Others say they will all repent just before He returns but before they see Him.
I contend that that is all part of a misinterpretation of the scriptures and a gross misunderstanding of the gospel in the work of God’s Son Jesus Christ.
“All Israel will be saved!” By all Israel being only those who trust in Jesus Christ, all people, Jews and Non-Jews without distinction based on their ethnic group, may be saved. But not all Jews, past and present will be saved.
About 2,000 years ago the Apostle Paul wrote:
25 For I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers, so that you may not be wise among yourselves, that hardness in part has happened to Israel until the fulfilling of the nations comes in; 26 and so all Israel will be saved, even as it has been written, “The One delivering will come out of Zion, and He will turn away ungodliness from Jacob. 27 And this is My covenant with them, when I take away their sins.” 28 Indeed, as regards the gospel, ones hostile toward you, but as regards the election, beloved on account of the fathers.
Romans 11:25-28 KJ3
Paul was writing to the Roman assembly, the ekklesia living in Rome, who were both of Jewish and non-Jewish (Gentile) heritage. He said that hardness was on the hearts of many of Israel but that was only temporary until the time of the Gentiles (nations) comes in. But that time had already come because Paul was in Rome preaching to the Gentile nations.
Through the Apostle Paul God makes it quite clear that when this happens “all Israel will be saved”. He then quotes from the book of Isaiah to establish this point. But the text of that promise which God made to Israel as quoted or interpreted by the Apostle Paul is different to what the prophet Isaiah wrote down.
20 And the Redeemer comes to Zion, and to those in Jacob [Israel] who turn back from their transgression, a statement of Jehovah.
Isaiah 59:20 KJ3
The subtle difference in the text uttered by the Apostle Paul indicates that the agency conferring righteousness on Israel is found in Christ (see next verse) and not in the decisions or actions of those descendants of Israel. The text in Romans makes it clear that this is Jehovah’s covenant with them but adds “when I take away their sins”. That make a huge difference. This also shows the importance of getting our interpretations from Christ’s and His Apostles’ teachings in the New Testament.
Jehovah in Isaiah is translated from the Hebrew name for God יְהוָֹה. The King James translators used LORD instead of YHWH or YHVH transliterated to Jehovah.
In the next verse of Isaiah 59 you have the Father Jehovah speaking to the Son, Jesus Christ at least a thousand years before He was born into human flesh. Many English translations miss this point.
21 As for Me, this is My covenant with them, says Jehovah: My Spirit who is on You [Jesus the Son], and My words which I have put in Your mouth, shall not depart out of Your mouth, or out of the mouth of Your seed [disciples of Christ], or out of the mouth of Your seed’s seed, from now and till forever, says Jehovah. (Square brackets indicate my clarifications.)
Isaiah 59:21 KJ3
The covenant with Israel means that Jehovah will speak to them through His Son Jesus Christ who is anointed with the Holy Spirit when He comes. Therefore fulfilment of promise that “all Israel will be saved” is through the Son, Jesus Christ.
Jesus came and spoke to His disciples (including the Apostles) saying:
21 But all these things they will do to you [His disciples] on account of My name, because they do not know the One [Jehovah] having sent Me. 22 If I had not come and had not spoken to them, they had no sin. But now they have no excuse as to their sin.
John 15:21-22 KJ3
If they don’t know the Son they don’t know the Father who sent Him.
42 Jesus said to them, If God were your Father, you would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.
John 8:42 AKJV
But because the Son came and showed them their sin, and they didn’t repent, they are justifiably condemned, and those who rejected Christ have no excuse. They have no claim on salvation, which is only available through Jesus Christ (John 14:6).
The Apostle Paul is one of the seed of Christ that Jehovah was referring to in Isaiah 59:21. When he spoke he had God the Father’s words in his mouth. This is the Apostles’ doctrine that supports Christ’s doctrine and that is found in the New Testament. Therefore we have from Paul the correct interpretation of what Jehovah meant when speaking through the prophet Isaiah.
13 But evil men and imposters will go forward to worse, leading astray and being led astray. 14 But you keep on in what you learned and were assured of, knowing from whom you learned, 15 and that from a babe you know the Holy Scriptures, the ones being able to make you wise to salvation through belief in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be complete, having been fully equipped for every good work.
2 Timothy 3:13-17 KJ3
Through Christ God breathed the Holy Scriptures, which came also through the Apostles, who are the seed of the Son. Thus “the Holy Scriptures … make you wise to salvation through belief in Jesus Christ”. Those are their teachings in the New Testament.
28 There cannot be Jew nor Greek [Gentile], there is no slave nor freeman, there is no male and female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if you are of Christ, then you are a seed of Abraham, and heirs according to promise.
Galatians 3:28 KJ3
In Christ the saved are drawn from both Jews and Gentiles, no distinction.
9 But you are “an elect race,” “a royal priesthood,” “a holy nation,” “a people for
possession,” so that “you may proclaim the excellencies” of the One who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; 10 you who then were “not a people, but now are the people” of God; “who not having received mercy, but now receiving mercy”.1 Peter 2:9-10 KJ3
The focus is on the One who did the calling out of the darkness and not on the ones who came out of it. The election, the elect race, the chosen ones, are not those of some tribe or ethnicity but those who God chose, “a people for possession”. Those God possessed when His Spirit possessed them.
They were “not a people, but now are the people” of God. That is not the 12 tribes of Israel. Those are all those the Holy Spirit possessed. They could be from any nation, people group or race.
The promises of God are fulfilled in that all who put their trust in the Son are the true Israel of God. They are the ones God was referring to when He said “All Israel will be saved”.
God is faithful and He has chosen His election to salvation. “All Israel will be saved” then means “all who are saved are in Israel”. The Apostle’s doctrine is “when I [that is, God] take away their sins” they are saved. Not the other way round.
God will never be robbed of His glory. It is always about Jesus Christ the Son. Nothing else matters.
