I think the vast majority of those who claim to be believers in the Lord Jesus Christ have no real idea of the meaning of the fulfilment of the Old Covenant God made with Abraham and the commencement of the New Covenant of Jesus Christ which He began by His death on the cross.

The Judaizers usually sling the old “replacement theology” polemic at you. Biblically it would be more correct to call it “fulfilment theology”, or “completion theology”. Jesus fulfilled or completed all the promises to Abraham. In Christ they are all fulfilled. God has made many nations, of Jew or Gentile believers, who are all in Christ. Not one of God promises have ever failed.

I have also learnt that this is called covenant theology. The Old covenant is dead and the New covenant began with Christ. The New covenant is not a continuation of the Old. It never was! The New replaced the Old. But whatever you call it, the correct theology is all about what Christ did on the cross. The current political nation of Israel bears no relevance whatsoever.

And as my title here suggests the New Covenant is not Old Covenant paperwork refreshed with new ink. In Christ we died to the Old and are born into the New (Romans 7:4-6). The Old was weak and useless and was thus cancelled or set aside. The New brought in a better hope, by which we draw near to God in Jesus Christ (Hebrews 7:18-19).

As a counter to this truth a Dispensational Judaizer made the usual satanic claim: “The holy, and eternal, [Old] covenant was refreshed in Messiah’s precious blood. Stop making things up.” To which JD @LostMyHats wrote on X.com:

I really appreciate your argument that the New Covenant merely “refreshed” the Old, rather than flushing it down God’s cosmic toilet, because it gives a really great opportunity to explain how Dispensational Judaizing is an affront to the gospel itself, and not just Christianity with a yarmulke.

And I love you for it!

Hebrews says God made the first covenant obsolete and that what is obsolete and growing old is “ready to vanish away” (Hebrews 8:13). Vanished. You get that?

Scripture says the former covenant was “set aside because it was weak and useless to perfect anything,” and that a better hope is introduced through which we draw near to God (Hebrews 7:18–19).

Scripture says the priesthood changed, and with it the covenantal order necessarily changed (Hebrews 7:12). That is not renewal. That is replacement (Colossians 2:16–17).

Paul talks the same way. He calls the old covenant a “ministry of death and condemnation” and says it was “being brought to an end,” (2 Corinthians 3:7–11).

Paul says we have died to the Old Covenant law through the body of Christ so that we belong to Another, and that we are “released from the law to serve in the new way of the Spirit” (Romans 7:4–6).

He says “if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died for no purpose,” and if you go back to law as covenant standing you “fall from grace and are severed from Christ” (Galatians 2:21; Galatians 5:4).

You see, your “refresh” claim is not harmless. It turns Christ’s cross into a maintenance plan for Sinai.

Jesus’ blood did not freshen anything up. It finished what the old order could never do. The blood of bulls and goats could never take away sins, which is why the entire system existed as a temporary pointer (Hebrews 10:1–4).

Christ offered Himself once for all, actually cleansed the conscience, actually secured redemption, and sat down because the work is done (Hebrews 9:14; Hebrews 9:12; Hebrews 10:10–14).

The New Covenant is not Old Covenant paperwork with new ink. It’s the burial of the old covenant and the inauguration of a better one, with better promises, full forgiveness, and a perfected people (Hebrews 8:6; Hebrews 8:10–12; Hebrews 10:14).

Of course, it’s necessary for you to argue the New Covenant is the Old one with a makeover, so as to argue Jews are still the chosen people. But as we’ve established, that’s dumb and you should stop it.

One response to “The New Covenant is Not Old Covenant Paperwork with New Ink”

  1. Behold, days are coming,” declares The Lord, “when I will make a

    New Covenant

with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah”.

    I will put My law within them, and on their heart I will write it;

and I will be their God and, and they shall be My people”.

For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.”

    Jeremiah 31:31-34

ALL who are unrepentant and are outside Christ’s NEW Covenant are under the wrath of God for sin.

God is no respecter of religious nor genetic lineage. (Rom. 2:9-11)

It is only in the New Covenant, enabled by the “law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus” that the inherited and sinful flesh of Adam is dealt with on the cross of Christ and buried in the waters of baptism. (Rom.6:3-11)

This is the only way to be set free from that natural law we see at work in us – the reality that our human nature tends towards rebellion against God – and breaks God’s commandments, so incurring the wrath of God upon our sin in us and therefore our death: The law of sin and death.

It is the only way to dwell in liberty to obey God’s moral standards. (Romans 8:1-2)

The New Covenant provides a new way! The ONLY way to put to death Adam’s sins nature in us and put on a new nature which is Christ IN us, the hope of glory. (Col.1:27 and 2:8-14)

    ‘And while they were eating, He took bread, and having blessed He broke;

and gave to them, and said,

    Take, this is My body.

And He took a cup, and when He had given thanks,

He gave to them; and they all drank from it.

    And He said to them,

This is My blood of the covenant,

which is shed on behalf of many.”

    Mark 14:22-25
