A grounding mat or bed sheet ostensibly connects the user to the earth of the user’s house electrical system. This is allegedly achieve by a connection to the earth pin of an electrical outlet as show in the image above. The idea is the equivalent of a person standing outside on the ground with bare feet so you are directedly connected to the Earth without any electrical resistance between you and the ground. Apparently there are health benefits if you can do this.
But there is only one problem with these grounding products (mats and sheets) now being sold online — they do not ground the user at all. I’ll explain.
On June 30 my wife pressured me into buying a grounding sheet for our bed from this company Terra Wellness, which is probably run out of someone’s bedroom in Sydney, Australia even though their Australian business number (ABN) and listed address on their website is in Penshurst, Victoria. Or worse, out of another country. Also our daughter, who lives with us, at the same time, bought a mat similar to the one in the picture above.
As a well grounded (pun intended) professional PhD physicist and research professor I was and still am skeptical of any health benefits from grounding. There may be some but only when the body is actually grounded. That means the body is brought to the same potential as the earth. When it is in contact with your body a current of electrons would flow into your body until it and the earth’s surface come to the same potential. That is something like equalising the pressure between two points.
Perhaps the claimed benefits for these grounding products were derived in studies when actually the body was directly connected to earth like you would get when standing on the ground with bare feet.
But this product, and also a similar product my sister-in-law bought from another company (I tested that one too), provides a very high value electrical resistor inline with the white cable ostensibly connecting the sheet (or mat) to ground (as seen in image here).
A few days ago when I decided to test this product at home to see if it does actually do what is claimed I measured the resistance from the sheet via the white cable using my multimeter and found it measured 100,000 Ohms. That is 100 kΩ. The Greek letter omega Ω represents electrical resistance in Ohms.
At this point I was puzzled because how could such a product ground a user’s body to the earth with such high resistance in the line between the user and the earth outside?
The company makes the claim that their technology has “Enhanced Conductivity”, “Premium Earthing Technology” and even has been “Clinically Proven”.
If your intention for the product is to conduct electrons from the Earth’s surface to your body via this cable then the current flow would be attenuated by a factor of 100,000 due to the 100 kΩ resistor. That is, the conductivity is reduced by that factor.
So you cannot state “enhanced conductivity” while reducing the conductivity by a factor of 100,000.
It is as if there is an open circuit introduced by that cable to the wall socket. You could do equally well with no cable at all.
I wrote to the company and asked them to supply a cable that has very low resistance (< 1 Ω) to make a real ground connection. At that time I had not found on their website the fact that the 100 kΩ resistor was intentionally included.
This is the reply I received 8/9/2026: [my emphases added]
Hi John,
Thank you for the detailed information and for checking both cables.
A reading of approximately 100 kΩ does not necessarily indicate that the grounding cable is faulty or open circuit. Grounding-product leads commonly include an intentional high-value safety resistor in the cable, often around 100 kΩ, to limit current flow while still allowing electrical charge to dissipate to earth.
For this reason, these cables are not designed to behave like a standard protective-earth electrical cable, which would normally measure close to 0 Ω or below 1 Ω.
If both of your Terra Wellness grounding cables are consistently measuring around 100 kΩ, this is therefore more consistent with an intentionally resistive grounding lead rather than two defective cables.
Please also avoid modifying or bypassing the resistance in the cable, as this safety resistance is there intentionally.

Joshua of Terra Wellness “Customer Care” admits it is intentional but then writes nonsense. He states “to limit current flow while still allowing electrical charge to dissipate to earth“. The two bold phrases are contradictory. To limit current flow and allow dissipation of positive electrical charge are the same but opposing each other. You can’t limit and allow at the same time.
The phrase “intentionally resistive grounding lead” is also nonsense. To ground is to dissipate charge to ground which means low resistance. A technical ground to protect equipment is usually less than 1 Ω. Depending on the potential difference (pressure) charge could flow either way if the resistance is very low. It becomes a two-way street.
I also guessed that they may have included such a 100 kΩ resistor to make sure they do not electrocute customers. Imagine a earth leakage fault in your power board or power socket, which connects the earth line to the active line, which puts an active voltage onto the earth line. In my work I have experienced just that. Someone could be potentially killed. Thankfully all homes in Australia have earth-leakage switches that trip if such a fault occurs.
Add to that the possibility of either a lightning strike and/or power surge. If lightning struck your building a damn lot of electrons would flow to your grounding mat or sheet if it was truly grounded. So the 100 kΩ resistor would provide significant protection against that.
Therefore I guessed correctly that their product is designed to avoid killing their customers but that also means it cannot do what it is claimed to do.
Then I thought since I bought the product June 30, 2026 we are still within the 90-Day Money-Back-Guarantee period.
I’ll ask for a refund. And so I emailed Terra Wellness:
I am not completely satisfied, not at all. Your website states: If you’re not completely satisfied, you’ll receive a full refund.
A day later I got the following reply 9/9/2026:
Hi John,
Thank you for your message, and we apologise for the disappointment with your purchase.
We understand that you are requesting a refund and are referring to the 90-day satisfaction guarantee stated on our website.
As your purchase was made on 30 June 2026, we acknowledge that your request is still within 90 days. Your refund eligibility will therefore need to be assessed according to the applicable terms of the guarantee rather than declined based solely on the purchase date.
We apologise for any confusion regarding the return timeframe.

Joshua acknowledges that it is still within the 90 days but then writes some gibberish about “applicable terms of the guarantee” when their websites states:
The refund policy just says “no questions asked” if not satisfied. Joshua, if he even exists, wrote “rather than declined based solely on the purchase date.” He already flagged what his intention was.
Now the stringing me along begins. But they claim:

Of course this is more nonsense. It wasn’t last year but June 30th this year. 90 days from June 30th, 2026 is September 28th, 2026. It is still within their 90-day return and refund period.
It is possible that Joshua is a group of scam-artists, and not a single person. Thus they can’t even keep their story consistent from one email to the next.
If you look up this company under productreview.com.au you’ll find that many people have the same, similar or worse problems with them. They seem to try to avoid refunding anyone.
Fake people. Fake products. No customer service. Scam alert.

All the Terra Wellness replies on the productreview.com.au site read the same. They must be using an AI bot to handle their appalling customer service. This is criminal.
Strangely enough to add to this I can’t now find any product on their website that is not SOLD OUT. They all seem to be sold out.
There is no doubt in my mind that this company Terra Wellness is a group of scammers and should be shut down, if you can find them. They list no street address only a suburb in Melbourne, and the mobile number is not answered but a message states that the mailbox is full and so you can’t leave a message either.
Grounding Mats and Sheets in General
Now, regardless of what you believe about earthing or grounding when your body is in direct contact with the physical earth, the concept of these grounding products that connect to the earth through an electrical outlet is utterly flawed.
Quite obviously in Western countries laws would not allow a product to be sold that connects you directly to an earth point in a power socket because of the potential danger of any electrical fault or even a lightning strike frying your brain and sending you into the spiritual realm.
So to get around that, and I suspect all such products do, they use a high value electrical resistor, probably rated to at least 240 V, to provide an open circuit between the product and the earth pin in the electrical outlet. Two different products I have measured had either a 50 kΩ or a 100 kΩ resistor inline between the mat/sheet and the earth pin in the electrical outlet.
This is a case of these fraudulent companies seeming to “have their cake and eat it too”. But not actually. They sell the idea that this product grounds you to earth when they know damn well it cannot, because they have introduced their 50 kΩ or 100 kΩ “safety” resistor, to prevent users being electrocuted and the companies being sued for wrongful death.
The entire grounding product line is a SCAM. Don’t fall for it!
Direct earth grounding (earthing) involves making direct skin contact with the earth’s surface, such as walking barefoot on grass or soil, to allow the body to absorb free electrons from the Earth.
When bare skin contacts the ground, positive ions transfer from the body into the earth while negative ions (free electrons) transfer from the earth into the body.
However, note that from a strict physics standpoint the actual charge transfer is carried by electrons (negative charge) flowing from ground to body to neutralize any positive charge deficit — positive ions themselves do not physically migrate out of the body into the ground.
Proponents claim and small-scale studies suggest this practice may reduce inflammation, improve sleep quality by normalizing cortisol rhythms, decrease stress, and lower blood viscosity. (I can’t verify these claims I find on the internet.)
Scientific consensus remains cautious, noting that while initial studies show promise, the research is often small-scale, lacks rigorous controls, and requires larger, high-quality trials to confirm the electrical hypothesis.
Additionally, health benefits may partly stem from the general wellness effects of spending time outdoors and disconnecting from video screens.
If you must ground yourself go outside with bare feet, but not in a thunderstorm with lightning around.
