In an article1 discussing the irony of Sir David Attenborough’s crediting contemplation of nature for solace he has felt after his wife’s death, the author rightly criticizes Attenborough’s double standard. Attenborough has for many decades, in his atheism, used his television programs to present a godless view of nature as a mere product of evolution and blind chance. The process, which he believes that evolution takes, is the very antithesis of something that induces peace, calm and reassurance.
The author, correctly, speaks of the great damage that Attenborough has done to our civilization both individually and collectively through the promotion of the atheistic godless Darwinian evolutionary philosophy. He cites one young man who fell away from the faith after reading Darwin’s book The Origin of Species.
It was opined there and has been many times in other instances of where this sort of anti-biblical pseudo-science teaching has led to some giving up the faith, even renouncing their Lord and Saviour. Various statistics from surveys of college students, for example, support this type of argument. There exist different points of view as to whether they lose faith or simply lose contact with the parental church etc, but no one can argue against a decline in the Christian faith in the West since Darwin first published his book in 1859.
One such famous person who rejected his faith is Charles Templeton. Once he preached to thousands with Billy Graham. But in regards to his desire to attend Princeton Theological Seminary, Templeton wrote to Billy Graham: 2
“But, Billy, it’s simply not possible any longer to believe, for instance, the biblical account of creation. The world wasn’t created over a period of days a few thousand years ago; it has evolved over millions of years. It’s not a matter of speculation; it’s demonstrable fact.”
Templeton warned Graham that it was ‘intellectual suicide’ to not question the Bible and to go on preaching God’s Word as authoritative. That means he set himself up as a judge over God’s Word. This was the beginning of his loss of faith.
I would suggest he did not really have the saving grace and did not trust in Christ. However, in a general sense, his own intellect led him away from God. This worked through pride, just like the devil tempted Adam and Eve, telling them they would be as gods. Templeton was a religious man but religion by itself cannot save a soul from Hell.
I believe that is why many intellectuals, who claim to have faith, have compromised and attempted foolishly to insert long ages into Genesis chapters 1 and 2. They wish to be accepted by the atheists as well as by other Christians. But in reality they are scoffed at by both. Those who believe that we have to somehow make the Bible believable, by compromising the plain reading on the history in Genesis, on some level must also believe that God is incapable of saving whom He wills. “Is my hand shortened at all, that it cannot redeem? or have I no power to deliver?” (Isaiah 50:2)
The Creator God, created everything and He is sovereign and has total control of this Universe and everything that goes on within it. There is nothing that gets by God. His understanding is way above ours. The prophet Isaiah writes,
Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding. Isaiah 40:28 (See also Romans 1:18-21 and Psalm 19:1-3)
He surely knows what He is doing. (Isaiah 55:8-9) But, what is He doing? Obviously there are many things we may never know. Scripture tells us that,
He hath made every thing beautiful in his time: also he hath set the world in their heart, so that no man can find out the work that God maketh from the beginning to the end. Ecclesiastes 3:11
No man can know all that He does—it is too complex. That includes the details of how He created the world—the whole Universe—and most importantly, life on Earth. He has given us a mind and abilities to search out the mysteries, but the Creation is incredibly complex and we may only ever have an approximation to the underlying nature of the laws that regulate the Universe. But who are we to question His Word, what He has revealed. That is where scientism has come in, a replacement for faith in the biblical Creator. It is setting up man as judge and jury over what God has said. This was the temptation of Satan in the Garden, where he tempted our first parents with, “Did God really say?”
Don’t misinterpret me here. Science is the discovery of the laws by which God made the universe and we can use it for good or for evil. I believe God gave us a mind to use to explore His Creation. But not to substitute the Creator for the things created, like those …
Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. Romans 1:25
Besides science, this relates to worldview, because by starting with the wrong worldview (big bang and evolution) man will not be able to correctly interpret even his own observations. It will lead his science down the wrong paths. Junk DNA (now found to have function), and the human appendix (as a vestigial organ) are good examples of this. The correct worldview is the correct foundation to build real science on.
God knows what He’s doing and He calls us to go preach the gospel and by that people are saved. It is in this climate we preach—in adversity and opposition. One of those adversities now is this Darwinian doctrine. The latter is based on the biggest lie of all.
So, challenge the faithless who claim it is science when it is scientism dressed up as science. It is the modern religion that, like a poisonous gas, is seeping into Christianity and polluting the minds of those who are not so steeped in the Word that they don’t recognize the deception. Evolution may seem to some Christians as ‘just science’ and nothing to be concerned about. But the atheists know better. Darwin historian Peter Bowler wrote: 3
If Christians accepted that humanity was the product of evolution—even assuming the process could be seen as an expression of the Creator’s will—then the whole idea of Original Sin would have to be reinterpreted. Far from falling from an original state of grace in the Garden of Eden, we have risen gradually from our animal origins. And if there was no Sin from which we needed salvation, what was the purpose of Christ’s agony on the cross? Christ became merely the perfect man who showed us what we could all hope to become when evolution finished its upward course. Small wonder that many conservative Christians—and not just the American fundamentalists—argued that such a transformation had destroyed the very foundations of their faith.
However the devil and his lies cannot destroy the faith of regenerate believers. But his lies are from the Enemy of your soul. He is the author of confusion. You have nothing to fear but God (Matthew 10:28), who has given us the understanding, not from science or scientism but from the mouth of God. So resist the lies of Satan (James 4:7) and take on God’s armour through faith. In this case knowledge is powerful, to rebut any doubts you might have. Hence the reason for different biblical Creation apologetics ministries and websites (eg. creation.com) and my own blog here.
And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life. 1 John 5:20
We are told to know the Word (2 Timothy 2:15) and not be ignorant. Yet in the last days shall come scoffers who question the promises of God.
Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. 2 Peter 3:3,4
This is the same today in all sciences, which try to reconstruct the past. They challenge the truth of God’s Word with evolution and a-several-billion-year-old Earth. All things continue as they always have from the beginning of time, they say. This is just like the lie of uniformitarianism, where, it is alleged that from slow and gradual changes observed in the present, we can extrapolate the same into the past. In this way the “unlearned” have perverted the scripture to compromise it with scientism. We are cautioned to be on guard against these errors of the devil.
As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction. Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness. 2 Peter 3:16,17
He shines the light of the true Gospel into our hearts; we know what truth is. He has promised the Comforter who will lead us into all truth. (John 14:16,17; John 16:13) At Christ’s return,
… many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. Daniel 12:2
Some in the church will have so compromised the truth of God’s Words they will not be living for nor following it at His return. We are to ensure that we have a white wedding garment, which is our salvation. But that salvation–our walk with Christ, our following His Word–will be tested and purged in the fire as all good gold is refined. Jesus Christ, the Creator says,
I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see. Revelations 3:18
We can see because we have the Spirit of God indwelling us. We are not deceived by those false teachers teaching doctrines of devils. In Matthew 7 Jesus admonishes us to build our house on the rock, the rock of His Word, so that when the storms do come, the believers will be strong to withstand their onslaughts. But never fear, as no evil can touch those who are in Christ (1 John 5:18). We can believe the Word as a simple child would. If God said He created in 6 ordinary days (Genesis 1), we can believe Him. If Jesus said He made man at the beginning of Creation (not the end like evolution says) (Mark 10:6, Matthew 19:4) we can believe Him.
Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity. 2 Timothy 2:19
