Alien spacecraft or an interstellar comet? That is the question that has been raised in regard to a recent discovery of an interstellar visitor named 3I/ATLAS. The visitor is interstellar because it is on a trajectory that takes it through the solar system. It did not originate from inside the solar system or from the Kuiper Belt of frozen icy objects but is on a hyperbolic trajectory which means it will approach the Sun but continue on through and out of the solar system.
It is called 3I/ATLAS. The number ‘3’ followed by the letter ‘I’ designates it as the 3rd interstellar object of this type. See Wikipedia article for the full story. The following graphic illustrates its trajectory.

What interest me the most about this comet and the discussion around it is the suggestion that it could be an alien spacecraft. From the Wikipedia article we read:
On 16 July 2025, astrophysicist Avi Loeb and other researchers of the Initiative for Interstellar Studies published a paper on arXiv speculating that 3I/ATLAS could be a “hostile” extraterrestrial spacecraft because they believed the object had “anomalous” characteristics, such as having an apparently large size, lack of identifiable chemicals, and an apparently improbable trajectory aligned with the Solar System’s ecliptic plane. Other astronomers, including Chris Lintott, immediately criticized Loeb’s speculation; the science news website Live Science reported that “the overwhelming consensus is that it is a comet,” ….
Loeb has previously suggested that 1I/ʻOumuamua and other interstellar objects including the reputedly interstellar meteor CNEOS 2014-01-08 could be extraterrestrial spacecraft, for which he was also criticized by many researchers. While Loeb has written in his blog that “the most likely outcome will be that 3I/ATLAS is a completely natural interstellar object, probably a comet,” he defended his hypothesis as an “interesting exercise in its own right, and is fun to explore, irrespective of its likely validity.” Astronomer Samantha Lawler highlighted that “while it is important to remain open-minded about any ‘testable prediction’, the new paper [by Loeb et al.] pushes this sentiment to the limit.” Lawler further said that extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, while “the evidence presented [by Loeb et al.] is absolutely not extraordinary.”
I agree with the criticism. There is nothing in the spectroscopic analysis of the outgassing products of 3I/ATLAS that would indicate the object is anything but a comet.
I know that people can misinterpret even the most innocuous messaging. Like that it has an anomalous Carbon Dioxide (CO2) output, more than 8 times that of other comets. So… does that mean it is full of little green men and women inside using up their Oxygen supply and hence the high outgassing of CO2? I don’t think so?
But the reason for the speculation by astrophysicist Avi Loeb and others is because of their worldview.
The belief system is that life evolved on Earth from the spontaneous generation of non-living chemicals some 3.8 billion years ago. Therefore if it happened once it must have happened numerous time in the Galaxy, let alone in the rest of the universe.
Of course, that is all truly nonsense! Life itself is not simply a certain arrangement of molecules. It involves that but it involves also complex codes information in the complex molecules that instruction the molecular machinery to reproduce themselves. And the code is imprinted on the arrangement of the molecules themselves.
Thus, without the Creator, the original Coder, there is no way to encode the complex instructions for the initial production of the complex biomolecules, let alone for their reproduction.
Life is not simple! There is no such thing as a simple cell.
So it all comes down to belief system. Not science.
Without believing the impossible astronomers have nowhere else to go. They have to shift the burden of proof for origin of life and evolution out into the distant universe. The reason is that all efforts to create life in a lab or discover new life evolving from non-living chemicals have failed miserably and will continue to do so.
No extra-terrestrial alien life (possibly apart from bacteria or microbes originally from Earth) will ever be detected in the solar system or elsewhere.
I can safely predict that no extra-terrestrial alien spacecraft will ever enter our solar system.
