In mathematics all theorems begin with unprovable axioms. By definition an axiom is a statement accepted as true as the basis for argument or inference. This is also true for all physical hypotheses and theories. In that case the starting assumption is by consensus generally accepted as being true. Nevertheless it must be recognised as being unprovable, even untestable, else it would not be the starting assumption.
I sometimes get criticised because I state that my starting assumption is that the biblical history and creation narrative as declared by the Creator is true. It is not something that can be refuted, because it is the fundamental basis for all theoretical development of our knowledge thereafter.
Epistemology is the branch of philosophy that examines the nature, origin, and limits of knowledge. How do we know what we know? In this regards my epistemological foundation is the word of God. So let’s begin there.
The Apostle Paul speaking to the Colossians about our Lord Jesus Christ wrote:
15 who is the image of the invisible God, the First-begotten of all creation. 16 For all things were created in Him, the things in the heavens, and the things on the earth, the visible and the invisible; whether thrones, or lordships, or rulers, or authorities, all things have been created through Him and for Him. 17 And He is before all things, and all things have subsisted in Him.

Here the reference is to the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who is the image of the invisible God, the First-begotten, meaning that of all creation He was first born of God. He is given this title “first born of God” which signifies His preeminence and sovereignty over all creation rather than indicating He is a created being. He is Creator not the created (John 1:1-3, 10, 14). Everything was created by Him whether visible or invisible. Even all the politics and affairs of mankind were created by Him.
All things have subsisted in Him. The KJV renders that phrase in verse 17 “by him all things consist”. He created everything including the physical laws that we discover. He provides the basis for even the physical laws by which the universe operates. He holds the fabric of space together. His created laws are held together by His hand. And we can test those laws.
Let’s look at the created Laws of Thermodynamics. The First Law describes the concept of energy and the Second Law the concept of entropy. We regularly use the term energy and generally know what it is, but what about entropy? Entropy describes decay processes which mean that all energetic systems are continually falling apart, becoming randomised. 16 For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day. 17 For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, works for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; 18 While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.
2 Corinthians 4:16-18 AKJV
All things visible are temporal because their decay defines the progress of time, the direction of which is called the arrow of time. While the incessant effects of the 2nd Law mean the decay of our bodies, God renews and regenerates our inner being.
Entropic decay eventually means death as our bodies run out of usable energy and physiological resilience goes to zero. Read Ancient Human Longevity and Its Rapid Decline.
However we are renewed spiritually, which eventually leads to eternal life through Jesus Christ.
34 As for the fact that He raised Him up from the dead, no longer to return to decay, He has spoken in this way: ‘I will give you the holy and sure blessings of David.’ 35 Therefore He also says in another Psalm, ‘You will not allow Your Holy One to undergo decay.’ 36 For David, after he had served the purpose of God in his own generation, fell asleep [died], and was laid among his fathers and underwent decay; 37 but He whom God raised did not undergo decay.
Acts 13:34-37 NASB
In the resurrection the effects of the decay processes are completely reversed. This is not a reversal of the 2nd Law but the addition of God’s sustaining power that reverses the effects of decay.
That is clearly shown in the burning bush! God spoke to Moses from the burning bush but the bush burnt without being consumed.
2 And the angel of the LORD appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the middle of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed. 3 And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt.

Oxidation occurs with burning. That is a 2nd Law process but God must have used His sustaining power to continually regenerate the bush even though it continued to burn. Read The Sustaining Power of the Creator!
However, we see the second law of thermodynamics as a description of the prior and continuing work of a creator, who also holds the answer to our future destiny and that of the universe.

Here we see acknowledged the hand of the Creator in one of His natural laws. The scriptures support this fact but also that God will eventually reverse the effects of decay in our new resurrected bodies and the renovation of the planet in the coming New Earth.
Therefore, my most fundamental foundational assumption here is that all things visible and invisible are founded in the Creator sustaining His laws of physics. They are His laws and they operate according to His design and plan. Even when they seem to be reversed as in the resurrected bodies of the believers at His second coming it is by His design.
Any suggested law that opposes the known laws is false. Syntropy for example. There are two different concepts for it depending on the context:
- Physics/Thermodynamics – A concept related to negentropy (negative entropy), describing systems that increase in order and organization over time, opposite to entropy
- Philosophy – A teleological principle suggesting purposeful evolution toward higher complexity and consciousness
On concept 1. there is a real law of physics, the fluctuation theorem, that permits negative entropy on exceedingly short timescales in biological reactions. It is used to repair DNA copying errors. But for the whole system on timescales of minutes or longer, entropy always increases in accordance with the 2nd Law. All other natural world processes involve increases of entropy when the whole system is considered together. And that means the whole universe.
On concept 2. the argument is, with the assumption there is no Creator, because we exist, we must have evolved to complex beings from inanimate matter. It is based on the false belief that the universe created itself and all life within it. It was inevitable because it is imprinted on the universe. Highly complex systems arise or emerge spontaneously leading to consciousness from inanimate matter alone. But, by definition, it requires reversal of the 2nd Law to succeed. It is a philosophical attempt to bypass the Creator.
Cosmologists in their pagan beliefs have suggested scenarios where the 2nd Law increase in entropy is reversed. That is only because all evidence points to a universe with entropy continually increasing as useful energy is consumed, i.e. used up. Naturalistically there can be no eternal universe because eventually it goes cold. And for the origin of their big bang universe they must assume a “creator” who started it off in a low entropy state.
One fairly recent example of that is the idea of a mirror universe. That is a pre-big bang universe that is the time reversed mirror image of the big bang universe. I do not accept the standard cosmology and cosmogony, the big bang origin of our universe, with no Creator except the laws of physics. But most cosmologists do.
Anyway the standard big bang universe is a problem for them because it has an origin in time. And in it the 2nd Law entropy is always increasing when they need it to naturalistically decrease to grow stars and galaxies. Their ‘solution’ is Dark Matter but that is another story. To eliminate the big bang’s origin a time reversed universe is proposed as preceding the big bang. Some of the important laws of physics are reversed by the trick of proposing time reversal. Therefore in that fictious universe entropy decreases with time.
A wild new theory suggests there may be another “anti-universe,” running backward in time prior to the Big Bang.

Then there is the 1st Law of Thermodynamics which describes the conservation of energy. Energy in a closed system is conserved; it may change from one form into another, but never does the total amount change. Energy does not come from nothing. The universe is no “free lunch”.
The biblical text gives us clear indications that this is true. Initially only the Creator God could create something out of nothing, that is, an ex nihilo creation. The Creator created the universe and everything in it from nothing, not from some prior existing energy either. Then He left it to run according to His created laws which we study in physics.
The miracle of the loaves and fishes tells us about this law. When Jesus created and hence multiplied the amount of food for the masses from a few loaves and fish the recipients were very surprised, as we would be. Why? Because we know that it breaks a law of physics. That was a “free lunch” but it could only be created by the Maker of the laws that under normal circumstances would prevent that from happening.
To get around the energy problem of an ever accelerating expansion of the universe, meaning increasing matter and energy, some cosmologists have proposed that the universe is a “free lunch”.
String theorist Michio Kaku:
How can you create a universe from nothing? Well if you calculate the total matter of the universe it is positive. If you calculate the total energy of the universe it is negative because of gravity. Gravity has negative energy. When you add the two together what do you get? Zero, so it takes no energy to create a universe. Universes are for free. A universe is a free lunch.
Kaku says that the negative gravitational energy1 of the universe nullifies the positive energy content in the matter of the gases, stars and galaxies.
Fundamentally there is no free lunch. Even for standard cosmology Kaku’s proposal is too simplistic. There are many contradictions in the standard LCDM model with many unphysical fudge factors required to make it work. They include energy terms for curvature of spacetime, Dark Energy – a type of antigravity, Cold Dark Matter – gravitates but unlike normal matter is unobservable, and other hypothetical entities. Materialists Believe in Dark Unseen Life.
But it is all fairytales piled on fairytales. At best it is circular reasoning which brings us back to the issue of the fundamental starting assumption, that is, that the universe sprung out of a big bang singularity, from a quantum fluctuation of a metastable false vacuum.
Every attempt of humans to remove the Creator from His own creation results in the proposal of fictitious fudge factors. Those fudge factors always involve unphysical forms of matter or energy, e.g. Dark Matter and Dark Energy, or other fictitious concepts like syntropy or negentropy.
So you see the laws of physics themselves point to the Creator. They are not the product of some random process, but of the organised product of an Intelligent Mind. We should be praising God for the stability and order He has given us in the laws of physics. Without them it would be chaos.

- Technically the potential energy in the gravitational field is not negative. It is stored energy and may be converted to kinetic energy in the matter ‘falling’ in the gravitational field. True negative energy would be exotic. That is anti-energy so that if you combined it with an equal about of the positive energy they would cancel each other to result in absolutely nothing at all.
