Sometimes I get sent video clips of talks where the claims of free energy from the vacuum are spoken about and that the technologies have been suppressed for many decades. Invariably Nicolai Tesla’s name comes up with the claim that he successfully harvested free energy from zero-point energy of the quantum vacuum.
Hearing these claims causes my head to spin. Perhaps I know too much and if I knew less I would just accept these claims as real suppressed physics.
Unequivocally I can say that Nikola Tesla never published any document on “zero-point energy.” That term belongs to quantum mechanics, which really developed after Tesla’s death in 1943.
What Tesla actually published and patented was research on “radiant energy” and “cosmic energy” — concepts that modern alternative-energy advocates (including Dr. Steven Greer) often retroactively label as zero-point energy, but they are not the same thing, scientifically or semantically.
Tesla’s Actual Published Documents on Radiant/Cosmic Energy
Nicolai Tesla obtained many US patents. On the topic of harvesting energy from space he was granted two patents on the same day November 5, 1901.
1. US Patent 685,957 — “Apparatus for the Utilization of Radiant Energy” (1901)
Filed March 21, 1901; granted November 5, 1901. This is Tesla’s primary patent on the subject.

The device consists of:
- An elevated conducting plate (antenna) exposed to radiant energy
- A ground connection
- A condenser (capacitor) that accumulates charge
- A switching mechanism to discharge the stored energy at intervals
Tesla described it as capturing energy from “the sun, as well as other sources of radiant energy, like cosmic rays.” He noted the device could work at night because cosmic rays are available continuously.
2. US Patent 685,958 — “Method of Utilizing Radiant Energy” (1901)
Filed the same day as the apparatus patent, this covers the method rather than the hardware. Tesla wrote:
“My own experiments and observations, however, lead me to conclusions more in accord with the theory heretofore advanced by me that sources of such radiant energy throw off with great velocity minute particles of matter which are strongly electrified, and therefore capable of charging an electrical conductor.”
3. Century Magazine, June 1900 — “The Problem of Increasing Human Energy”
In this major published article, Tesla wrote about harnessing energy from the “ambient medium.” He was quoted as saying:
“The upper air strata are permanently charged with electricity opposite to that of the earth. So, at least, I have interpreted my observations, from which it appears that the earth, with its adjacent insulating and outer conducting envelope, constitutes a highly charged electrical condenser containing, in all probability, a great amount of electrical energy which might be turned to the uses of man.”
4. Press Statements on the “Cosmic Ray Motor” (1932–1933)
In interviews near the end of his life, Tesla claimed to have built a motor powered by cosmic rays. From the Brooklyn Eagle, July 10, 1932:
“More than 25 years ago I began my efforts to harness the cosmic rays and I can now state that I have succeeded in operating a motive device by means of them.”
And from the New York American, November 1, 1933:
“This new power for the driving of the world’s machinery will be derived from the energy which operates the universe, the cosmic energy, whose central source for the earth is the sun and which is everywhere present in unlimited quantities.”
The Critical Distinction
Compare what Tesla actually said with what modern alternate free energy advocates claim that he said.
| What Tesla Actually Said | What Modern Advocates Claim |
|---|---|
| Radiant energy from the sun and cosmic rays | Zero-point energy from the quantum vacuum |
| Charged particles hitting a conductor | Quantum vacuum fluctuations |
| Photoelectric/cosmic ray collection | “Free energy” from empty space |
| 1901 patents and 1900/1930s articles | Retroactively attributed post-1940s quantum concepts |
Tesla’s “radiant energy” patents describe a device that functions similarly to a solar panel or cosmic ray detector — collecting energy from external radiation sources, not extracting energy from the quantum vacuum itself. The quantum vacuum concept did not exist in Tesla’s framework.
He never mentioned “zero-point energy” because a) he never developed any device to extract useable energy from the quantum vacuum, and, b) the science of “zero-point” energy as residual energy in the quantum vacuum after all thermal energy had been extracted was in its infancy at the time of his death in 1943.
What About the “Suppressed Papers”?
After Tesla’s death in 1943, the FBI seized his papers. While this is historically true, there is no credible evidence that those papers contained working designs for zero-point energy generators, free-energy devices, or anti-gravity technology. The FBI’s own files indicate the papers were reviewed by MIT and found to contain speculative theoretical material, not suppressed breakthroughs.
Tesla’s actual published documents, the two 1901 patents and the 1900 Century Magazine article are the primary sources. They describe radiant energy collection, not zero-point energy harvesting. The connection between Tesla and zero-point energy is a modern narrative constructed by figures like Dr. Steven Greer, who is a retired physician, not a physicist, and others in the alternative energy community. The term, in any language, is not found in Tesla’s own writings.
Here is the timeline of when the term “zero-point energy” was coined and published:
1911 — The Concept (Not Yet the Name)
Max Planck first introduced the mathematical concept in his paper “Eine neue Strahlungshypothese” (“A New Radiation Hypothesis”). He posited that harmonic oscillators retain a residual energy of ½ hν even at absolute zero temperature. However, he called this “Restenergie” (rest energy), not zero-point energy.
A quantum of electromagnetic energy is the smallest, discrete amount of energy that can be emitted or absorbed by an atom and characterised by hν, where ν is the frequency and h a constant named after Planck. Planck’s work was the beginning of what would become quantum theory, which developed from his time on.
1913 — The German Term
Albert Einstein and Otto Stern published a paper titled “Einige Argumente für die Annahme einer molekularen Agitation beim absoluten Nullpunkt” (“Some Arguments for the Assumption of a Molecular Agitation at the Absolute Zero Point”). In their paper, they used the German term “Nullpunktsenergie” — the direct predecessor to the English term “null-point energy”. They applied it to dipole oscillators and confirmed Planck’s spectrum with it.
1916 — First Application to Empty Space
Walther Nernst extended the idea beyond material oscillators to the electromagnetic field itself, proposing a “cosmic quantum-ether” filled with zero-point energy. This was the first suggestion that empty space itself possesses this energy.
~1919–1924 — Early English Usage
The English equivalent “null-point energy” appeared sporadically in scientific literature during this period, used by researchers such as:
- Frederick Lindemann (1919)
- Richard Tolman (1920)
- Robert Mulliken (1924), who wrote of a “null-point energy of ½ quantum” in molecular spectroscopy
~1925 — “Zero-Point Energy” Becomes Standard
The English term “zero-point energy” became common only from about 1925 onward. According to historian Helge Kragh, Niels Bohr may have been the first to use this exact English term, possibly in an unpublished paper from 1916. By the mid-1920s, as quantum mechanics formalized and half-integral quantum numbers gained acceptance, the term entered regular scientific usage.
Summary Table
| Year | Figure | Term Used | Milestone |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1911 | Max Planck | Restenergie | Mathematical concept introduced |
| 1913 | Einstein & Stern | Nullpunktsenergie | German term coined in publication |
| 1916 | Walther Nernst | Nullpunktsenergie | First applied to empty space / vacuum |
| ~1925 | English physicists | “Zero-point energy” | Standard English term established |
About Tesla
Nikola Tesla died January 7, 1943 at the age of 86. The term “zero-point energy” did not exist in English during his working lifetime.
His final patent application, titled “Apparatus for Aerial Transportation,” was filed on October 4, 1927, and registered on January 3, 1928, when he was 70 years old. That was about 2 years after the English term started to be used in the scientific literature. Also the FBI stated that they had testimony from the hotel, that he stayed and died in, that Tesla was mentally deranged in his last 10 years.
The underlying quantum mechanical concept to the term “zero-point energy” was only emerging in German physics journals in the 1910s — while Tesla was already in his fifties and working on entirely different problems. Any claim that Tesla published research on “zero-point energy” is anachronistic; his work was on radiant energy and cosmic rays, not the quantum vacuum
Quantum Foam and Zero-Point Energy
Modern experiments are able to cool a group of atoms to temperatures only a few hundred billionth of a degree above absolute zero — zero kelvin (0 K or -273.15°C), named after Lord Kelvin (William Thomson) who was instrumental in the formulation of the first and second laws of thermodynamics.
The quantum foam is a model that characterises the residual energy in the vacuum apart from any material particles. It comprises ephemeral “virtual” particle pairs that come out of the vacuum but rapidly annihilate each other in a chaotic foam. They represent the zero-point energy.
That energy has an effect on supercooled atoms near absolute zero (0 K) that can be measured experimentally but it is extremely small.
Even if you could exact a little useable energy from the quantum vacuum, with a quantum of energy ~ 1 eV (an electron volt) it would be too small to do anything useful. For example, to boil 1 litre of water in an electric jug 2.1×1024 eV of energy is required. The number is astronomically large because 1 eV is the energy of a single electron moving across a 1 volt potential difference, while boiling water involves heating roughly 3.3×1025 water molecules.
But the underlying problem is thermodynamics.
Energy transfer or transformation is required to extract useful work, as governed by the laws of thermodynamics.
- First Law: Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only converted from one form to another; thus, total energy in an isolated system remains constant.
- Second Law: No energy transfer is completely efficient. Every transformation results in the loss of some usable energy as heat, which increases the entropy (disorder) of the universe.
Consequently, useful energy can only be extracted during a transfer because the system must move from one state to another, inevitably losing a portion of that energy to waste heat.
An example is a steam turbine that derives thermal energy from coal to heat water to steam, which is compressed in a chamber and allowed to expand driving a mechanical piston, which drives a shaft or a electric generator.
If the source of heat is already at the same temperature as the ambient environment (no temperature difference) no work can be extracted. So if your hypothetical device couples to the zero-point energy of the quantum vacuum at 0 K both it and the quantum foam are already near 0 K. No work can be extracted.
Besides to even get to near 0 K at the cold finger of the device, like the one shown below, an enormous amount of energy is needed. The device shown uses a 3-phase compressor running at about 10 kVA (kilowatts) to power the cryogenic refrigerator.

Now that I have explained what zero-point energy really is, I hope you can understand that a confusion has persisted with Tesla’s research and patents on extracting radiant energy from the Sun and cosmic rays.
Like a game of Chinese whispers such claims may have taken on a life of their own. Nicolai Tesla should be given a lot of credit for his groundbreaking work on alternating current and his many inventions, which have been used in the last one hundred years plus as the West industrialised using cheap electricity. But the one thing he never mentioned in any of his writings or patents, nor did any of his inventions use, was “zero-point” energy from the quantum vacuum.
