Evidence Against a Flat Earth: Solar Eclipse Shadows Exmouth, Western Australia

Total solar eclipse (not from Exmouth) — Wikipedia

Stargazers are in for a treat today, as a rare ‘hybrid’ solar eclipse is set to plunge parts of the world into total darkness.

This type of astronomical event – where the moon blocks out a different proportion of the sun in different parts of the world – only occurs once every 10 years.

In some places including Western Australia, viewers will experience a ‘total’ solar eclipse, where the face of the sun is completely blocked by the moon.

The Daily Mail April 20, 2023

This was reported by the Daily Mail before the eclipse event occurred.

I am in Perth, not Exmouth, and I can say it did occur as predicted. Total eclipse occurred up at Exmouth Western Australia today and only a partial darkness at Perth around 11:30 am.

But how did the Daily Mail know when it would happen? Perhaps they got their information from NASA who publishes schedules of such events. Another will occur on April 8, 2024.

According to the Flat Earth proponents NASA lies. We’ll how did they get this right this time. It is because NASA like most sane scientists/ astronomers use the well established model of a spherical planet in motion around the Sun with the Moon revolving around the Earth.

When speaking of eclipses of the sun, there are three basic types. First are partial eclipses, when only the moon’s outer shadow, called the penumbra, interacts with Earth. From within the penumbra, only a part of the sun is seen to be covered by the disk of the moon. Next are total eclipses, where from only from within the dark shadow cone of the moon, called the umbra, can a total eclipse be seen. And then there are annular eclipses or “ring of fire” eclipses, so called because the moon is too far away and hence too small to cover the sun, so a ring of sunlight remains visible around the edge of the moon at maximum. In order for the umbra to reach the Earth during this type of eclipse, the moon must be closer than its average distance.

However, there is a fourth type of solar eclipse, known as an annular-total or hybrid solar eclipse, the rarest variety of all. Of all types of solar eclipses, hybrids account for just 4.8%. In the 21st century, only seven such eclipses take place. And one of them will take place on Thursday, April 20.

I think Flat Earther would have a difficult time explaining this. But even more significant is that this eclipse is “hybrid”. This is a rare and special type.

A hybrid solar eclipse combines an annular and a total solar eclipse where the former becomes the latter and then usually reverts back. Therefore, observers at different points in the eclipse path can experience different phenomena. For example, if you watch a hybrid solar eclipse at sunrise or at sunset you may see a brief “ring of fire”. If you watch it at midday — so at the mid-point of the eclipse’s path across the surface of Earth — you’ll experience totality. It’s therefore impossible to experience both an annular and a total solar eclipse during a hybrid event — you have to make a choice.

This is evidence that depending on where you are on the surface of the globe you would see a different view of the eclipse annular or total. This is because from those different locations on the eclipse path you are at different distances form the moon. How does that occur on a flat earth? It doesn’t.

Looking at the flat earth cartoon above it is hard to see how an eclipse forms at all, let alone a hybrid.

But what is clearly a design feature (by the Creator) is that there are times when the moon perfectly eclipses the disk of the sun and we get a total eclipse as shown in the image above. This is the result of a nearly circular orbit of the moon around the planet. It allows us to see the spherical shape of the moon as it has occurred at different times through history.

Also it has permitted ancient astronomers to calculate the distance to the Sun using trigonometry. That means that the diameter of the Moon to the diameter of the Sun is proportional to their relative distances.

The Greek astronomer Aristarchus of Samos (310 B.C. to 230 B.C.) was the first to measure the distance to the Sun. He used the phases of the Moon and Lunar and Solar eclipses to measure the sizes and distances of the Sun and the Moon.  He used the diameter of the Earth by Eratosthenes of Cyrene (c. 276 B.C. – c. 195/194 B.C.) to do so. See below.

So it makes much more sense that the Earth is a globe. It is also something that has been known for 2200 years. This is not in conflict with the biblical text. It teaches us that we have a rational God who made the solar system and the planet Earth for life, human life, all life. The COVID psychopaths will never destroy that no matter how hard they try. God is in control.
