Recently I have been painting pictures of butterflies. Some are Monarchs but some are fictional creations of my own, like the one above. However I can say, hands down, the Creator’s creation of the butterfly and the metamorphosis process it undergoes from caterpillar to adult is truly amazing. It is an example of an irreducibly complex process that requires all of the parts to function simultaneously. See this short video presented by Dr. Paul Nelson.
How does a caterpillar completely dissolve itself and reassemble into a flying butterfly? Using the life cycle of the Monarch butterfly, Dr Nelson explores the astonishing biology of metamorphosis — from silk pad attachment and chrysalis formation to apoptosis, autophagy, and the rebuilding of wings from imaginal discs.
Inside the chrysalis, most of the caterpillar’s body breaks down into cellular “soup” before reorganizing into a fully functional butterfly, complete with a precision-engineered proboscis that locks together like microscopic latches. Is this merely evolution at work, or does metamorphosis reveal irreducible complexity and intentional design in nature?

Michael Behe’s concept of ‘irreducible complexity’ involves an organism whose functioning requires a sequence or a set of parts that all are simultaneously needed for the function, and if you took away one part it could no longer have any function.
The idea that a stepwise Darwinian sequence could not be found would refute Darwinian evolution. Behe used as an analogy a mousetrap, where if you took away one part it could not function, thus indicates design and not incremental construction by Darwin.
We see irreducibly complex structure everywhere in nature. They are a signature of the Designer and Creator of all living organisms. See this related post: Illusion of Design in Living Things?
